Hello All,
just joined so hope you can help. I have a 1997 Jeep Cherokee Sport 2.5 litre petrol engine,which is rough on idle with revs dropping and climbing back up. No difference when vehicle is warm. Sometimes I need to dip the clutch and give more throttle to pull away. Hope you can help on this.

Not all that familiar with the 2.5 but you may want to start with egr valve if it has one (I think it does) or look into a map sensor condition... map sensor will usually cause a high idle when starting so I am not too sure about the erratic side of it. The IAC motor should not cause the problem but it is controlled by the map sensor and TPS so those wouldn't hurt to check. A repair manual will usually show how to test the sensors if you can't find anything else.

Hello The idle has noe gone erratic with high as well as low idle revs. While accelerating the power response is very flat and the revs do not want to climb. This is accompanied with pooping and the occaasional backfire.

Any ideas? Replaced the plugs, distributor cap and new leads attached. Car fully serviced with new oil filiters etc.

Help....
