What Tools do I need to replace the water pump on a 1999 Jeep Cherokee with the 4.0 motor in it and also how do you tell if the t-stat is bad...I really need to know before Friday....Thank you guys..

If you have any doubts about the t-stat, just buy one. The premium t stat from NAPA is ten bucks and the gasket is 37 cents.

I'm just wondering I'm pretty sure that its fine temp and everything works like it should doesn't spike at all just when it starts to overheat

As has been mentioned, a t-stat is cheap enough and easy enough to change if youre overheating. You can also check to see it working on your stove top in a pot of water.

Changing out your water pump is pretty easy and straight forward:

Disconnect battery.
Drain coolant.
Remove fan and shroud.
Loosen pulley, remove belt, pull pulley.
Remove coolant hoses.
Remove accessory brackets from water pump but DONT disconnect them. Move them out of the way.
Remove water pump.
Clean everything up and install new pump.
Put everything back together in opposite order.

If possible, while both the t-stat cover and water pump are off, stick a garden hose in the t-stat hole to flush old coolant/crud out the water pump hole. Flush heater core and radiator also.

I did it this way....

Disconnect battery.
Remove fan and shroud. (my fan shroud is gone, and i left the fan there)
Loosen pulley, remove belt, pull pulley.
I removed the power steering pump thing
Remove coolant hoses. (left the metal one on..SOO much easier to take off outside of the jeep)
Remove accessory brackets from water pump but DONT disconnect them. (accessory brackets?? You meant the things holding it in palce?) Move them out of the way. (I removed mine hahah didn't cause any problems)
Remove water pump.
Clean everything up and install new pump.
Put everything back together in opposite order

Edit thats lie, I didnt disconnect the battery. I never do. haha

What is the easiest way to get the pulley off from the water pump so I can remove the two bolts behind it....Please replay asap....Thanks Chris.

With the belt on and tigh..loosen the bolts but don't remove them! Then do everything else, then when you get the point of remove the pump remove it then. The conitnue with the removal.

Been trying the best thread to ask these questions: 1. My 4.0 (2WD) is plastic..right? 2. Since it's almost impossible to access my side-mounted Draincock..I'll certainly need a metal Radiator if i want to have a Draincock drilled-in (on the bottom, ofcourse)..right?

The pulley is sort of half-way pressed onto the hub...it's not a real press fit, but it's tight. As mentioned, loosen the bolts first, then either pop it off with a prybar behind it (carefully, it's just stamped and it'll bend) or use a puller if you have one short enough. Two prybars would be better. It'll come. You may want to tap the face with a hammer (again, gently) to get it to pop.

My '99 4.0 T-Stat needs changing. 2 Bolts...that's it? Normally, on most any vehicle, 3 is minimal...or at least I thought...

OK...I removed my Grill and Headlight-frames. What else needs to be removed (because, I STILL can't see any sign of the D-****.)
