Thats what I was talking about. I'm not sure what year but somewhere in the mid to late 90s the 4.0 was changed to have a simpler 2 bolt tensioner setup. My fiance's 98 TJ has the 2 bolt setup. I think 97s have it as well. They must if the 96s were 2 bolts.

just did this on my 98.

pulled the battery and tray, piece of cake. did take a bit of thinking to squeeze the alt out once it was unbolted.

the Alternator should only be 2 bolts. They act as the grounding for the Alt too.

FYI for future Alt problems i just spent weeks finding out...the "BAT+" connection the Alt (eye-hole connector, 1 of 2 connections to the Alt) needs to be tight. If that nut is loose, and it spins when tightening, you will not have a proper connection to the Positive flow. Even tested GOOD many times at different stores. Just a note incase you replace the alt, check it before installation!

I know this is an old thread but I figured Id post here, instead of making a new thread.

So I'd like to know why when I loosen the adjustment bolt nothing happens but it seems to be working fine for everyone else... I have a 94 xj 4.0 with the two bolts on PS and the slide one down below. ive done everything I know to do, but im not getting any slack at all from the belt. ive loosened the long bolt almost all the way to coming out. really frustrated right now. this shouldnt be such an issue. not to mention im going out every time the rain stops for a few minutes, since it has to rain all day just when the alt goes bad on the jeep. sigh..

yea, I feel dumb now. right after I posted this, I went out one more time since the rain stopped again and got it... but thanks. that picture was exactly what I was looking for.

the only other trouble I had was getting the damn battery tray out and then the stupid alt got stuck when I was pulling it out and almost bent my fan. sigh. at least that ordeal is over with. I dont know why it took only 30 mins to get it out of one at the junkyard but almost 4 hours on my own.. I will change the alt on my mr2 any day over a damn xj. jeebus..

My 98 I found it Easier to pull the two mounting bolts then loosen the front mounting bracket on the motor it's 4 15 mm it allows it to drop right out the bottom and slide right back in
