Default Replaced U-Joints still have a "clunk"

I got around to reaplcing my U-joints with new Greasable ones...and was happy when i drove it around town the car felt smoother and didnt clunk as bad. But its still there.... Specially noticable on the highway...If i let the car coast then give it about 1/2 throttle it will POP/Clunk so i didnt find anything loose while i was under there. My jeep has 145K and that seems a bit early for a worn out Rear end. so Im gonna jack the car up and check the pinnion bearing, and also how much gear slop i have. If i decide the problem to be worn bearing/ring gear i have several 98/99 Jeeps in the JY i could get one from. my question is what rear does it have? dana 35 chrysler 8.25? there is no tag on the diff to tell the gear ration but i will check the original window sticker i have. Also what about the rubber Bushings on each end of the Leaf springs?? from what i can see they are cracked/dry rotted who sells em? Any input or suggestions would be awesome.?? Im just worried if i get one from the JY it will be no better than mine. Thanks!!

-Jesse

you can get the leaf spring bushings from any auto part store. for the clunk did you put your snap rings back in. cause if you dont it will side back and forth making a clunk. and for the rear end to tell. Dana 35 will be mark Dana 35 on the dif cover and look on your front diff tag to see your gear ratio cause it will be the same as the back. Im going to go more on the 8.25 rear end on your jeep.

This clunk you describe sounds normal. Mine has done it since I bought it, and just about every other Jeep i've driven has done it too.

I've found that lightly getting on the gas after coasting seems to really cut back.

theres a few threads of what the different axles look like. search for one or just do a google search. make sure your ds set right and that all the bolts are tight. is your jeep stock? or is it lifted?

Where is your clunk coming from front or rear?

Here are the rear axle shapes so you can determine which one you have.

that is exactly it if i ease into the gas its smooth as can be....but it doesnt clunk when put into gear anymore so i guess im good.

Is there any small lift kit i can get with new leaf springs lake 2" maybe?? nothing to big to overpower my stock rims/tires.the jeep is all stock and the plastic isolator pads between the end of the springs are almost gone.???

I suggest you start a new thread with the lift kit question as it will be lost in the current "Clunk" question.

Sounds silly, but anyone think to check the engine and trans mounts? I've had many a car come into the shop with a weird clunk like that just to have it be a trans mount or one of the engine dog bones or pads. Just a suggestion...

I really wouldn't worry too much about it then....tis just a Jeep thing

Some day, when I'm down there taking things apart, i'll probably go ahead and throw a new tranny mount on and see if that helps it any. For now, i've learned to be easy on the skinny pedal when going from coasting to accelerating.

UNCC sometimes if the tranny mount is in real bad shape it is difficult to get 4WD to engage and/or will even pop out of 4Lo. Just thought you should be aware.

Yeah I was thinking motor mounts as well. Had one get tore up on the trail a couple months ago. But you could FEEL that clunk through the gas pedal as well as hear it. It was an ungodly sound... I mean, the motor's not supposed to do jumping jacks.

Suggestion don't buy stock replacement style motor they suck..Mine already needs replacing and I bought them at the local parts store and there is a huge gap between the rubber stuff and the metal upper part of the mount at the arc..I will be getting these..

Good call.....Didn't really think about that, and it makes sense.
