Removing Oil Pan ?
97 Cherokee 4.0, No Lift.
Can the Oil Pan be removed without raising the engine.
Also can I replace the Rear main seal & thrust bearings without dropping the Crank ?

Got that same problem on my 91.
Manual says it's possible. You do have to remove the starter, the exhaust and move the tranny lines, and it'll really help if the front axle is hanging, so use a hoist that doesn't use the wheels to get it into the air. Or if your like me and have to do it in the driveway get it nice and high as you can and support it by the frame instead.
Having done this many times on other engines yes you can replace the seal without dropping the crank. PITA though. Especially if your doing it on your back.
Good luck!

I've done it. Jamie is correct you can do it without raising the engine. I did it on a lift so the front axle was at full drop, remove starter, exhaust down pipe, disconnect trany lines, and I disconnected the steering at the pitman arm to give myself more room. You do kinda have to wiggle the pan around once you have it down to get it out past the axle but its not too bad. I was able to replace the rear main and all rod and main bearings without droping the cranck. hope this helps.

Oil Pan
I just did it, Removed Starter, Broke lose Sway Bar and Shocks to get the axle to drop as much as I could and was able to slide oil pan out the back.. Rear oil seal yes but would think you have to at least break loose Crank caps to beable to slide a trust bearing in there and plasti gage it

Good Day Brothers,
I removed the pan by suspending vehicle at frame. Loosening the tranny line supports and the exhaust. You will have to unscrew the thin aluminum plate between the pan and the tranny which consists of 3-4 screws. Beleieve it or not this will make a difference. Pry the exhaust to the side and wiggle the pan toward the rear. Please do not forget to clean and apply gasket sealant for a good seal. The seal will not stay in place when reversing process so I went and used a plastic strap/tie downs on each corner and make sure to snip those babies off upon screwing. This took me a total of about 4hrs to accomplish.

x2 on the jackstands going to the frame. Get that front axle as far away from the pan as possible ... makes a huge difference.. I also didnt remove the starter or exhaust to get mine down or up.

Having the same problem
Trying to replace the oil pan gaskets on my 87 cherokee, removed the starter, pulled tranny lines to the side, disconnected the steering, jacked up the frame so the front wheels are hanging. The oil pan is still stuck inbetween the tranny and the front axel, only need another inch to get past the tranny, don't want to bend the oil pan to get it out. Whats the easiest way to get the sucker out, or can i put the gaskets on in place?

Installed an RE 3.5" Lift first
Than removed the Starter and the Steering stabilzer,
then it fell right out
However I am bummed I need a new engine, the Rod bearings are toast

This is how i did mine on a stock 99.
1)Disconnect battery
2)Drain oil
3)Raise front and let axle droop and support jeep with jack stands (near LCA)
4)Remove starter
5)Remove inspection plate
6)Remove oil pan bolts/studs
7)Drop the pan
At this point, the only thing that prevent you from sliding the oil pan back is the front axle.
8)Place a jack on the axle pumpkin and raise it a little at a time (this will move the axle forward thus allowing the oil pan to drop).
Many like myself have done it this way.
Take my advice with a gain of salt........i sometime post a bunch of bs just to get my post count up
