Default rear disc brake conversion

so i heard you could take the rear disc brake setup off the newer grand cherokees and swap it over to the XJ....is this true and if so has anyone done it?

i heard that you can use the same parts off the 94 thru 98 grand on the 8.25 and the d35 just got make the hub center hole a little bigger to fit the 8.25 is this true?

will the master cylinder on the xj work or do you need to get one off of a zj.

All you do is grab everything for the rear brakes from a Grand Cherokee with a D35. If you have an 8.25" rear, then you have to get a dremel to widen the hole a little bit of the backing plate. Then just pull your axles, bolt up the backing plates, reinstall your axles, and put on the rotors and calipers. Then it's just connecting the brake lines and bleeding the system. Minor fabrication has to be done to the e-brake cable from what I've read.

ok cool, i dont plan on hooking up the e brake anyway. and is there any certain year grand cherokee to take the brakes from.

The ZJ models, 93-98. You're gonna want the proportioning valve too.

best to use crown vic brakes if you can find them... there is a write up on JF.

I couldnt find any so I did it the hard way.

You will need TJ rubicon plates. I also recommend gettinga stock d44 one from your XJ.

to use ZJ brakes you need to have backing plates re drilled, as well as the tj rubicon retainer plates. Of course you will need new bearing.seals, and axle collars.


What I did for this way upgrade to chromo's from Alloy Usa since all that came in the kit for 300 (2 yrs ago).

why the proportioning valve also? they shouldnt be any different....

About half way down the page you'll find a very god write up about how to use the ZJ disc's on the D44.

I currently have all the parts just waiting till I tear down the axle for a over haul to do the install on mine..

again i ask why proportioning valve too? i went to the pull n save yesterday and got the backing plates from a 97' grand. some one apparently tried to take the whole assembly but couldnt get the axles out (took a good pull) so left the backing plates, sucks for them, good for me!

The prop valves are different from a disc equipped prop valve... here is a link to pics and differences i found when doing this.
