Default Rear brakes locking up when wheeling!!

I have a D 44 rear with drum brakes. The last time I went fourwheeling the back brakes would lock up intermittently upon application, it was only one side. I would just start to apply the brakes and they would lock up immediately. They would release when I let off and lock again when used. I pulled the drums off and everthing looked straight, so I'm not sure what the deal was. Just wanted to put this out here to see if anyone has experienced the same issue. THANKS MUCH JEEPERS!!!!!

Welcome to drum brakes

When they get debree in them they love to do that until they clean out. Not a whole heck of a lot you can do.

2nd rig w/ drums, never had that happen before. We did do some nasty water crossings that day though. Thanks for the headsup!!

Its the deep mud and deep water crossings that will do it.

You can try adjusting them. There's normally a star adjuster at the bottom of the drum and you can access it from the backside of the backing plate or take the drum off to get to it. The trick is to adjust both sides so that the shoes just barely touches the drum when you slide the drum back on.

I don't know about others but when i do mudding i take apart the front/rear brakes and hose everything down. Most people (that i've seen) never bother cleaning out the drums or discs after going through the dirty stuff and it builds up and causes issues in the future. It may be a chore doing it over and over but so is doing the dishes everyday

I would agree with kyle on this one though. It sounds like dirty drums.
