Rear axle identification
I need a little help. I have a 89 cherokee and the rear end is bad, It looks like the bearing went out and the ring and pinion are torn up bad.
I found a guy parting out a 96 cherokee on line. But I am not sure how to identify the rear end I have and what to look for to replace it.

I think any cherokee rear will bolt in, just make sure the gearing is the same as your front axle if 4x4. dana axles are stamped dana on the diff cover as for the difference between 35 and 44 I'm not sure, I do know the chrysler 8.25 has a flat spot on the bottom of the diff & cover that's a dead giveaway. do a search on axle identification for more info.

you probally have a Dana 35..... or a slight slight minooooot possibility of a Dana 44
with an exception of the Dana 60 and ford 8.8.... those didn't come stock in an XJ

The axle will swap if it's from another XJ but the driveshaft may be a different length. The shaft from a 35 is shorter than one from a 8.25. Not sure about length on a 44, so rare I've yet to see one.

even if you have a D35 I would try to go for a C8.25 (especially if you can get a '97+, they are stronger)
as for gear ratios....by and large XJ's with 4.0L and Auto tranny have 3.55 gears, and XJ's w/ 4.0L and Manual have 3.07 gears.....make sure you check first tho just to be sure!
