Don't they make harness adapters for Jeep?
Much easier that cutting and soldering.
Especially for the next guy if you sell the jeep, of for you if you want to change out the radio to a different brand.
The previous owner of my 95 did a hatchet job on the harness. I had to go in and undo then redo the mess.
The adapters I speak of have the JEEP connector on one end, and your Radio brand connector on the other.
Might cost up to $30 but damn worth every penny.

You can get all the wiring adapters and a "Master Sheet" describing the install procedure from Crutchfield if need them. The write up on this thread is excellent! The stock head unit is not all that bad, the stock speakers are fairly weak, an upgrade would be very noticable. A nice subwoofer really makes it shine, even a combo unit under the passenger seat would make a big difference. You wil not get much bass out of the door or overhead speakers. I would also take this opportunity to fix the front speaker door wiring. If yours have not broken yet, they will. Many threads on this if you are not familiar with the issue. JB

Before I do this tomorrow. Is there any diagram on the top of the stock radio, so I know what wires are for what, when I wire my new stereo in?
I didn't attempt to pull the bezel yet, i am afraid of cracking it.
I have a new Sony stereo that I want in badly. Has been sitting new in a box for 6 months. Time for me to make use of it.

As for the rear speakers, I used a butter knife to pop the plastic covers off, then 2 screws hold in the speakers to the sound bar. Very easy removal/install.

Hey TonyPa, Unless your XJ is different than my 96, the Bezel is held in with 2 or 3 screws below the dash, one near the headlight switch and 2 at the top above the gages. I have also had to remove the steering column shroud (torx) bolts to make it easier to pull the whole plastic bezel out. The radio covering and gauge cover is all one piece. Tilting the steering wheel down gives some extra room to work the whole assembly out. Yes it will requrie some tugging, just take your time. After I removed the assembly, I scored the inside with a razor knife and separated the radio area from the gage covering side. This made later work behing the radio bezel easier to remove without taking the whole thing apart again.

I bought a radio install kit from wally world. I see two plastic brackets in there. I will be in the garage today, gonna take a look and see if there is a wiring adapter inside. I don't think there is. I paid 16.99. I may have got the welfare version one.

Damn, I opened the package up. Yup, only two plastic housings in there. Don't know why there are two. no wiring plug. That is to be purchased separate, 'says on the package'. thanks wally world!

That is exactly what is in the picture I posted twice. Wally world harness on the left, harness that comes with the radio on the right.
