On my 93, it takes 38 ounces of r134 and 4.6 ounces of PAG... yours should be the same. If you can find what the 89 takes, then you would figure around 80-90% of what the r12 was.

I just did my 93 yesterday and it took 3 cans. There is a chart you can follow if you google it. My pressure stayed low around 30 to 35 psi.

Well, that was July of 2007 that I did it and she was still blowing Arctic air when I tried it out a week ago before I left on my trip to Nevada. guess I'd better find some wood to knock on...lol.

Yeah, I guess even authority figures can make mistakes. Good thing we have guys like you to correct the authority figures. I wonder why you haven't been asked to become an authority figure.

I would never put R134 in my '89 XJ. I "converted" mine to R134, but it never saw a drop of R134 loaded. Instead I charged it with Duracool (http://www.duracool.com/). It's completely non-corrosive and compatible with R12 compression profiles and oils, and out performs even R12, let alone R134. The only negative is you don't want to smoke when installing it. But one assumes a pint or two of propane/butane mix is nothing compared to 20 gallons of gasoline.

Wish i would have known about that Duracool stuff when I was faed with having to "convert". I was in California at the time and R12 couldn't be had. and my AC needed to be recharged.
