just picked up a 97 cherokee sport when i turn on the head lights the dash lights and stereo lights dim im not sure if theres a short drawing to much power or whats up with it

Probably increased resistance in your ignition switch (the headlights run through the switch) or related wiring.

I'd suggest getting a headlight harness upgrade. Contact jhc7399 on here for a good product at a good price. The harness modifies the existing system to power the headlights from the battery and uses the existing headlight switch to power relays - this reduces the load through the ignition switch and will eliminate the dimming you're seeing. It's plug and play, no cutting/splicing wires, just a few screws to run the wiring behind the headlight and grill trim pieces.

I have the set from Jeff (jhc7399), it took me less than an hour to install and has worked perfectly. There was a noticeable increase in the intensity of my dash lights after installation.
