Post Power Steering Pump Pulley broke while pulling

Hey everyone,

I am brand new to the forum and brand new to XJ repairs, so thank you for any help. I read through many articles detailing how to replace a power steering pump pulley on the forum preparing to do the job myself. I rented the puller from AutoZone and went to work. After beginning to pull the pulley the entire pulley broke into many pieces, leaving only the metal center on the pump. I went back to Auto Zone to get the claw style puller to hopefully grab that center price but so far no luck. Any advice?

Can you get some vice grips onto the center piece of the hub? Then use the claw style puller to pull on the vice grips.

Thanks for the reply Mahoney,

Unfortunately I don't think a vice grip would work in this instance, but I think it is a clever idea. The center of the pulley is just too small to get a grip in a good position. I am going to try to split the pulley center with a metal cutting bit today. I think that, or just buying a new pump all together are my only options, so I am going to try to cut it off first.

I'm assuming you used a "Jaw" type puller??

Preeety sure Autozone loans the proper pulley puller tool.. The PS pulley is the same idea as the 3.0L Ford Taurus PS pump..

You need a special power steering puller. I would ask a different counter person for the correct one.

See the pictures in the post a few up from mine. THAT is the puller you need. There is also a puller to INSTALL the pulley. Should be included in the PS Puller kit.

Hey Diskman,

Thanks for the info. I rented the "sheath and 2 half of circular nut" style puller ( which I saw in the forums as being successful) and that is what broke my corroded pulley. I ended up trying to use a metal disc attachment on my drill to cut through the center piece of the pulley that was still attached to the pump with no success. Just Ended up getting a new pump and called it a day. On two the water pump tomorrow!
