Default po705 NSS issues and ohm readings

Hey guys, I know the nss topic has been beaten to death on here but I've read every thread about it and my issue seems to be unique.

So when I bought my 99 cherokee sport 4.0 aw4, the reverse lights didn't work and I very randomly had no overdrive. I tried taking off the old nss to clean it but the plastic housing cracked on removal so I bought an autozone/duralast nss for $270 since the local jeep dealership wants $440 for one.

I put it on and immediately get code po705, I then tried adjusting it multiple times but nothing ever changes. It always starts in park and neutral and my reverse lights always work, but whenever the po705 code pops up I lose overdrive. If I erase the code, I can drive around absolutely fine and overdrive works but once the code comes back I immediately lose it.

I used post #9 in this thread (https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/che...-p0705-141863/) to ohm test the switch and here are my results..

trans in park/probing A and G= infinite resistance
trans in 3/probing A and G= .6
trans in 3/ probing A and H= infinite resistance
trans in 1-2/ probing A and H=infinite resistance
trans in 1-2/ probing H and E= infinite resistance
trans in reverse/ probing H and E= infinite resistance
trans in reverse/ probing A and B= infinite resistance

Im starting to think the autozone sensor is bad, does this seem likely?

I have yet to adjust the detent cable but Don't see how that could cause a nss code.

I've adjusted the new switch in many different positions, it's currently set in the middle of the reverse lights being off and on

I appreciate the help, I reset it and took it for a long drive. the code came on and still had no overdrive, shift points seemed a little less lazy.

So this morning going to work I had no overdrive on the highway, it was fully up to temp before driving. On the way home from work I had overdrive on the highway with the check engine light still on. Going to reset the ecu/tcm and possibly go buy a new tps from the dealership today

today I replaced the tps sensor, reset the ecm/tcm, and re adjusted the nss. sure enough the code came back on during the test drive.. gonna get a refund for the autozone nss and buy one from the dealership and try that. if that doesn't work then I have no idea whats even left to try.

Sounds like you got a bad new one. Why not get one from the parts yard and refurbish it? The place I deal with has a policy that if the part you get there is no count bring it back for another one until you get a good one. Had to do this twice with a 22R Toyota carb.

theres not really any pick and pull yards around here, a family friend owns a small auto recycling yard but I doubt he has any xjs. I'd rather just get a brand new one than drive a couple hours out of the way for a used one. But the dealership wanting around $450 for one definitely sucks

I'm in the same situation as you as far as JY's go. Local ones literally crushed everything when metal prices were up. Now it's a 1 1/2hr drive.

Maybe give Rock Auto a try for a NSS. GOOD people to deal with.

I usually do order parts from rockauto but I think I'm just gonna fork over the cash to mopar so I can go oem and avoid any possible bad new parts. never thought a neutral safety switch would give me so much problems lol. thanks for the help

Your quite welcome. Shame yours busted on you. But then there's no guarantee refurbishing yours would have helped either. I think it was Cruiser54 that had bad contacts in his making it unusable. Hope you get her straightened out.

My understanding is it involves the NSS(bad, dirty,or out of adjustment),its wiring harness, and its connector. Before refurbishing mine I first had no b/u lights. Then intermittent starting problems in park. Then in neutral. Crazy thing is it never did trip a code.
