Hey all, i'm new to this forum, but i've had a jeep cherokee before and now i have another one to replace the one i was in an accident in, there both 92' jeep cherokee laredo, except the other one had a better sound system, bigger tires, of course a lift kit, none of which i've done myself. anyway i got this jeep used from someone on craigslist and it is in great condition other then the owner suggeted it has an oil leak. i've watched it and only noticed a few drops every so now and then. but recently its been showing weird numbers on the oil gauge. the gauge was when i got it showing around maybe 70, it was just a line below the max of 80 and the other day after driving it across town, and it started knocking on the way home, i saw the oil gauge was really low, and i added oil like it asked and its gauge is giving some weird reading, if someone could help it would be nice!

how much oil is on the dipstick? knocking was most likely just from low oil level.
how fast does the oil gauge move at start up?

the oil leak could be a few different common areas.
first and easiest would be the valve cover gasket.
next could be the oil filter adapter o-ring.
or it could be the rear main seal.

rear main is a little more involved, as you would need to remove the oil pan, and the rear main cap then simply change out the seals.

to find out for sure you might have to clean the old oil and grime off the block, then look for the fresh oil leak to know where it is leaking from.

When it starts it makes a clanky sound and then sounds fine, the oil pressure when it starts is around maybe 70, it quickly shows it 70 then when it warms up or when i stop at a light or sign it shows 40 and decreases really quickly. and i only notice on the ground that there is a few drops, also does anyone know how to remove the door panels and back panel on the gate to replace the speakers, when i got it, it had a new stereo and blown speakers, the stereo is nice because i can plug my ipod into it. thanks for the quick replys

when i first noticed it, it was at the add line and then when i added a quart of oil it said safe.

k, just keep and eye on your oil level.

once you find the leak, it can be fixed quite easily. even the main seal isn't too hard to do.

oil gauge should fluctuate a bit while driving, that's normal.

as mentioned, you might need a new oil sending unit to get rid of the clunking at startup.
