oil pressure sending unit
I have a 96 cherokee that leaks oil from the plug in on the oil pressure sending unit. I was going to just cut the wire and find someone parting out a jeep and take it off and put it on mine.I am not a mechanic so if this cant be done can someone tell me how to do this.

Why are you considering cutting any wires? I don't see the logic.
Remove connector and simply unscrew to replace the oil pressure sending unit. I'd buy new from Jeep if I were you. Oil pressure sending units are a very common failure on the 4.0 and many aftermarket units are not holding up well.

If you're seeing oil in the plug connection of the sending unit, replace the sending unit. It must take all of 5 minutes. I've replaced 2 in 160K miles.

Just be carful not to use a wrench on the plastic. You can break the sending unit if your not careful. You can get a sending unit socket but if you can be patient and careful you can use a wrench. I used channel locks but that was in a pinch and I was very careful.

i have a silly question. i just broke my oil pressure sending unit while replacing my oil filter i know stupid right?. anyways i understand you want/need to see the oil pressure readings but will the jeep still function properly without a working sending unit? does the sending unit just register oil pressure? i plan on getting it fixed asap but i just want to know if it will still function fine without having this part. again i believe it just registers oil pressure and i understand the importance of it if thats all it does. I just need to know, thanks in advanced.

The sending unit just sends a signal to the ecm and your gauge or idiot light. I suspect with a broken sending unit you'll get a CEL and a red idiot light due to lack of pressure signal. I don't know if this will trigger an auto-shutdown or not.

No, you get the "check gauges" light, because it's showing one gauge (the oil pressure one) as reading zero. Mine does this. I've been trying to work the heck out of that system, which is only a two wire sensor. Argh!@$^^&$#!! Mine reads 40-50psi on a hard-line test gauge.

if no oil is leaking and it doesnt shut off on ya then yer fine. I pull the connector out when I do oil changes because it gives you an extra bit of room and less force if you do bump it. Just have to remember to put it back in.
