Hey Guys,

Just today my jeep seems to have pooped itself, anytime the engine is below 2k rpms the oil pressure needle drops to zero which casuses the check guages lights on, I have an automatic so luckly i can drop the girl into lower gears to keep the RPMS up. What could be the cause of this, just yesterday it was running fine no even cause to concern, but today... no beuno. Please any input would be great.

P.S. any crazy bad damage caused by this if driven 20 mins to work and back if i keep it around 10 - 20 on the gauge? its only when i come to stops i begin to feel my stomic note and worry.

Mine did this one day out fo the blue, dropped donw to zero, checked and it was a bit low on oil, about a quart or so, so I topped it off and it's been fine since.

My 2000 sport had a cracked head. Coolant SLOWLY leaked into the oil causing premature wear on the bearings. Since oil pressure is created by tight tolerances in the bearings, this is quite possibly your problem. How's the coolant level, and have you had to add any?
The crack can be found between #'s 3&4 cylinders.

i would replace the oil pressure switch, its by the oil filter. really easy to change out. unplug the wiring clipand i think its a size 21 or 22mm wrench. you can pick it up at any parts store. that should fix your problem, 9 times out of 10 it does. jeeps are known for doing this.

Thanks for the feed back im going to the advanced auto parts today. Hopefully ill be able to swap it out easy, praying i have the socket size

Only thing that happened recently was the upper radiator hose cracked, also causing problems. Had that replaced and then a misfire in cylinder 6. I installed a new radio this past week, which caused the computer to resent and the CEL to go off and i have been driving it for 3 - 5 days now and today the oil pressures ****ed, no CEL though. But recently the coolant seems to be ok.

hey, so advanced auto parts are officially out of their mind.... 50 BUCKS! but also is there a special attachment ill need to get it off? they show some special socket they are selling for an additional 50 bucks...

That looks like it. A really deep socket works best, but you could use an open end wrench. You just have to be really careful installing the new one as the connectors are very fragile.

And there are some cheaper ones on Rockauto.com- around $20

Ya i would do that but its kind of a situation where i need to get it done tonight, so if it doesn't work i can get it to my mechanic to work on fixing it. So i unfortunately will be getting the 50 dollar on

or if you had a multi-meter you could test the old sensor and find out if it's reading correctly. Probably even save the $50. You may need the money if you have the nortorious cracked head issue.

Luckly, i have it warrantied from top to bottom except the fuel pump and A/C... So if it is, unlucky for the mechanic who did that. but hopefully this problem will be fixed with the switch, i for some reason do not believe it will, i just looked at it, seemed fine.

Update!!

So cold started it at work to just move it toward the back of the lost, 40psi at start up then steadily drops as the car warms up. No knocking or anything like that. I took this time to also further inspect oil pressure switch, i noticed that some oil was leaking out of it... Normal? The culprit? Also is there anything special i need to no about replacing this besides unplugging the plug and unscrewing and repeat backwards for installation?

hey sry i did not get back sooner, im in afghanistan. well if it is leaking some i would still replace it. you dont need a special tool to do the job, tell them there nuts. deepwell or wrench just like the other guy said to. it would be the cheapest way to go, also like inside of your valve cover where u put the oil and see if they are wet or dry. if dry then you have a bad oil pump or its starting to go since there is no knocking.
