Thumbs up oil in air filter/ power loss/ poor gas mileage

I have 1 1993 Jeep Cherokee and recently Ive had performance problems. I noticed there is oil on my air filter and up the dipstick shaft and it is losing oil slowly. My gas mileage has gone to crap also. My jeep feels like its fighting back when I'm on the gas pedal. The light that tells me when to shift is telling me to shift much sooner than before, for example its telling me to shift into 3rd gear when I get to 25 MPH. I know theres a chance of a blown head gasket but I'm hoping somebody might have some advice or tips for me. Thanks

well before i started thinking it was a blown head gasket i would start with maybe new plugs, wires and cap. cleaning the throttle body and checking for vacuum leaks. i would think if head gasket was bad you would have oil leaking from under the head or water, milky looking oil on dip stick or in radiator

That link was exactly what my old 88 cherokee experienced. I needed to replace the tubes from the valve cover to the air cleaner also. They dried out and the rubber portions cracked. When replacing the PCV valve I could see the caked up deposits in the opening. I removed the valve cover and found the top of the valve cover was caked with dried sludge at both ends. After cleaning the cover, replacing the PCV and plastic tubing, I had no more problems with oil in the air filter.
