Default No reverse.....

Hi after spending a good few hours searching the web and phoning around ive been given no good answer as to why my grand jeep cherokee 4.0 with selec-trac gearbox will not reverse in 2 wheel drive but will in 4 wheel drive ??? and with no knowledgeable people around where i live im faced with having to drive it a good 70 miles not knowing if im doing it any more harm and making things worse..... this being England and unless its a range rover of some sort not many people seem to have a good working knowledge of how this things work i love my jeep to bits and would much sooner see it back on the road as soon as. So any ideas and thoughts would be very welcome.. on an up note though ive just picked a well looked after high milage quadra-trac of the same year (96) but in the wrong color ... but hey im sitting high

thanks for looking
Bill
After thought ! there may well be someone where i live that could answer all my jeep problems but right now i cannot find them or im looking in the wrong places.

Dont know if this will help. I just took my jeep in to get the transmission looked at because I was having trouble with it going into reverse. Ends up the i need to replace the transmission. Not sure of all that was wrong with it. I know that I wasnt getting any oil presure in reverse. Anyway hope this helps.

Theres a few threads about the reverse bands needing adjusted. I have the same problem but mine does engage after a few tries. Could also be the linkage needs adjusting.

x2 on this adjust the bands all of them and linkage before buying a box every dealer in the uk will tell you its nackard purely because they dont know how to work on them if it tures out to be a gearbox problem it is far easy to swap it out rather than open it up there are hundreds of these lying about in the uk because of the cost to run them shouldnt be hard to find a low milage box

I was left thinking the same i now know that the bands are in the bottom of the box you have to drop the pan off and then jump through some checks some boxes need you to back of screws 7 turns others 4 turns before re torquing every think back up.... so you realy do have to know what box you have and so on before trying this.... but as a update on mine it took a turn for the worse it is the gearbox or transfer box as now when i try select reverse the front right wheel is trying to jump and there is one hell of a bang when it dose select and wont move at all if you have any stearing angle on at all just allows the engine to rev freely but hey after 170000 ish miles something had to go i guess just a shame it waited till after it had been servised so i guess ill strip most of the parts of it and then save them for the one i just bought to replace it. is a shame as its still to good to brake for spares but ill take what i can and make the best of what i have but thanxs for peopls time and help but you guys have left me with some ideas on what id like to do to with mine now some high lift and bigger wheels may soon be on order once ive made some room to work in
