The dash mounted electric door switch is next to the rear wiper switch. It's a rocker type switch.......push it up, the 4 doors unlock, push it down, the 4 doors lock. It would be nice if it also locked/unlocked the tailgate, but it doesn't, so I'm wondering if it is possibly broken/malfunctioning by not locking/unlocking the tailgate.

Is that factory or aftermarket. That switch is in the location of my fog light switch. I have a 98 classic and door and window switches are in driver's door.

..........because you have power windows and power door locks, right? Our '98 Cherokee is the plain jane SE......no power locks or power window switches in the drivers door, only the switch in the dash. No fog lights either.

whoah... thats strange looking. i cant believe they would mount a locking mechanism switch in the dash. it doesnt look like there ever were switches in the door panel?
if not it has to be aftermarket, in which case it probably wasnt done correctly or the wiring is messed up somewhere. they also could have simply failed to put an electric mechanism in for the hatch when they did the doors (maybe they didnt know there should be one).

The SE is the base-model, it came with roll-up windows, basic gauge cluster (only idiot lights, no volt meter or oil pressure). I doubt it came with standard power door locks. That looks aftermarket.
The 2 main things I do not like about the SE are the gauge cluster and most have no roof rack.

The only controls on the drivers side arm rest are the buttons for the power side mirrors. This '98 Cherokee was purchased new by our local municipality and I bought it from the city at auction 10 days ago with 42K miles. It just seems odd that the city would add aftermarket power door locks but hey, anything is possible. Like I said, no owners manual. Kinda makes you wonder if door lock electric solenoids were installed at the factory on ALL Cherokees, even the plain Jane SE model, and all they need is wire and a switch to make them work. Doubtful, but again, anything is possible.
Factory options include A/C, premium cloth hi-back buckets, power mirrors, 4.0L I6, automatic, rear window wiper/washer/defroster, roof rack, tilt wheel and full size spare. The addition of aftermarket (I guess)electric door locks sure is handy. It does have the idiot light dash but my opinion of factory gauges is they're only a slight step above idiot lights. The ScanGauge tells me the important info and does it with digital accuracy.

That is definitely aftermarket.. the switch style is a give away.
Some of those kits had selenoids to unlock the hatch, but most were pretty basic.
The very early model XJs had the power window switches on the center console. But I can't remember any power door lock switches being there.

I'm really surprised that the city would do that but I'm glad they did.....it works really well. Now, let's see what needs to be done to get the tailgate hooked up with the doors.
