Why did you drop the tank?

FWIW, when you guys pull out the fuel pump module, is the tapered rubber grommet on the pickup tube bottom? If not, it's floating around in the tank and if not reinstalled will cause fuel pump noise.

BTW...your '89 must be different than my '92 (??)... it is possible to replace the pump without dropping the tank.
I replaced the fuel pump on my 92' and did not have to drop the tank

For brands most people recommend Bosch but I have no experience with them. Just avoid Airtex. You get what you pay for on stuff like that.

If you have an airtex pump i would almost guarantee thats the problem. Buy a bosch, some modifications are required to the bracket and wiring but its such a better pump

Folks, there are so many threads similar to this with issues with Airtex fuel pumps that it isn't even funny.

Yes, some people have had reasonable luck with them. But MANY have not. Premature failure, noise that sounds like a jet airliner, incorrect pressure, etc. And because of these real stories in the field (and my PERSONAL experience with those pieces of crap), I tell everyone to stay away from them like the plague.

Get it out of there. My favorite is Bosch. My second choice is Carter. Anything is better than an Airtex.

You sure do freegdr. Airtex is commonly offered by many parts stores as a low price point choice.

Price is NOT how you should shop for a fuel pump.

The garage I went to figured out it was a bad fuel pump and they dropped the tank. It is however accessible from the forward side of the tank.
By the way, the fuel pump has quieted down now that it's been well over a year. Initially it was annoying it was so loud.

i took the resistor off mine, original burnt up and was only letting 9 volts thru it. my pump is loud now, but the dealer here said it would be. he is the one that recommended bypassing the resistor. said they take them off all the time.

It's fine to bypass/remove it. The original 87s didn't have it. We were installing them in a kit form for customers who complained about the noise.

Funny you shuld bring this up. My wife came home from work the other night and told me her XJ was intermittently acting like it did just before the fuel pump went out last summer.
So I checked the ground at the fuel pump connector to body. Perfect. ulled the fuel pump relay and checked the terminals. Looked great as I had alrteady removed all those relays, wire brushed the terminals and sprayed electronics cleaner into the sockets as I always do when working on these Jeeps. I did it to hers 2 years ago.

So then I went over to the resistor. The spade connectors coud be wiggled easily with my fingers. I unplugged them and saw the tabs on the resistor were dark from arcing. Got the terminals out of the plastic holder in the harness, squeezed each side just a skosh, reinstalled them into the plug and then reattached them. No more wiggling. Nice tight connection.

Last night, after her day off and the running around all over town she does on her day off, she came in and said the Jeep has run perfectly. Food for thought. I then thought I might do the same to my Comanche just to be sure they're tight. They were real snug already.

Would incorrect return pressure cause this?

More thoughts from anybody.
Warranty it I had the same problem with a airteks pump and 2 weeks later it started causing my engine control 1 fuse to blow
