New Air box mod!!
ok here it is:
Approximated time:30 to 45 mins,, depends if you are a fast or slow worker
Approximated difficulty: well I did it, so in a scale of 1 - 5 it will be about a 1.5
Materials:
power drill
1 1/4" drill bit
about 6-7' of 1" plastic tubing
vacuum cleaner
duck tape
silicone
hand saw
1/2" socket wrench
Process:
1) take of the top of the air box and filter, put it aside
2) take of the lower air box 3 nuts, 1/2" socket
3) decide where you want to cut your holes, and seal the front stock hole with duck tape
4) drill the desire holes on the lower air box and clean the plastic shaving
5) on the driver side of the fire wall,, select where you want to drill and check for clearance and safety, check if there is nothing back there
6) once you have drill your holes,, clean up the metal and plastic shavings with a vacuum cleaner
7) starting from fardest to closest measure and cut, then start putting your tubing lines and seal them with the silicone,, on the air box from both sides and on the fire wall from engine bay side,,MAKE SURE ITS SEAL REAL GOOD, the point is to get fresh air if you dont seal it right hot air will get it..
8) once is all sealed up, step back, appreciate your work and let it dry..
9) remember to put back your filter and air box top
finish product
here is a look of the tubes in the lower air box
here is a look of the tubes leaving the lower air box
here is a look of the tubes entering the fire wall
and finally a pic of were its getting the fresh air from
enjoy, hope it helps and any question feel free to ask

I've seen this done with 3" PVC and a elbow in the cowel area, so my buddy could put a Cone filer on it so it had a pre-filter....
Nice write up, plaining to do something like this to my ZJ come spring..

Whats the temp rating on that plastic tubing? If its the tubing im thinking of that you got at Home Depot, you should have holes in it shortly from the exaust manifold heat.

well if you do this instead of 3 small tube with 1 bigger one,, you can pull it up and do a snorkel..without cutting a hole on your fender...

yes,, if you do what I did, but instead of 3 small tubes with 1 big 2.5" or 3" tube,, you can continue the tube line (up the grill between your hood and windshield) to your A pillar and its a home made snorkel
that way you dont do a traditional snorkel coming out of the side fender.
