New 99 Cherokee
Hello, I just purchased a 1999 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 for $600. It has 226,000 miles on it. I know it was a gamble, but you never know. Anyways the engine runs a little rough when at idle and when stopped in drive. Just changed the spark plugs and wires. What else could it be? Recently when in gear and stopped there is this vibration under the shifter and it has just gotten louder and I have no idea what it could be. Other than that there is no other problems that I know of. Is there anything I should look for before I drive it to much?

Try changing the cap and rotor as well. Napa has good caps and rotors.

How does a vibration get louder?
Inspect the transmission isolator mount above the cross member. See if its all saggy looking.

That's an easy one

I'm guessing with that many miles it's in need of a timing chain. External adjustments can only do so much but the crank and cam are mechanically out of sync.
Mine has 241k on it and if I weren't changing out the engine next week I'd be putting a chain in it.......
Best of luck with it. You got the best year......

Transfer case shifter will rattle when bushings are worn. My 01 does it with 184,000 on the odo. If I push it forward a bit it will stop.

Pull wheels, check brake lining, hoses and lines. Replace any deficiencies.
Crawl under front and lube it. Make sure all the rod ends are in good shape (no sloppy play). Check for worn ball joints, suspension arm bushings and sway bar bushings and mounts. Replace anything that's worn out. While your under there, check the shock absorbers.
