Remove it (carefully)
Disassemble and clean it
Add some fresh dielectric grease and reassemble
Reinstall.

Could you tell me where the NSS is located? I have a 1993 Jeep Cherokee and this morning we went to the store and when we came out it would not start, it acts like it does when you try to start a car with it in drive. All bells and gages, lights and everything, it just won't engage. Years ago something like this would have been NSS. I hope it is so I can get back on the road but then again I hope it isn't because the parts store wants $255 for the part.

EDIT: Can you do the bypass to test to see if it is the NSS?

Thanks,
Gary

Passenger side of the tranny.
Tried starting it in neutral yet?
Run the shifter through the gears quickly a dozen times or so.

I did thy neutral. I had some one push it yesterday and I put it in drive and then back to neutral and it started I tryed starting it today and a no go. I did do the bypass thing and it didn't work so I'm now kind of worried to get a $255 part and not be sure that it what it is.

Thanks for the reply,

Gary

I just did mine for the first time. Quite easy and worth the shot before you spend that 200 bucks. I had to play with my shifter to get it started and my back up lights didn't work or worked sometimes. When I took mine apart the grease inside was like tar. The connecting tabs were stuck so they didn't even touch the contacts......

You unplug that harness, cut a few zip ties to get it out, unbolt that one bolt on the side of the NSS, then you take the large nut off that's on the side of it, but you first have to bend back the tab washer that holds the nut in place. When you go to put it together don't tighten the large nut down too much or it will make your shifter in the rig real stiff.

Don't know if this helped but I hope

I tried tapping on the NSS along with running through the gears and it didn't start, I then tapped on the starter two or three times and it fired right up so I'm thinking it's the starter.

EDIT: Is the relay built on the starter?

Thanks again for all of the help,
Gary

Thanks for the info. Mine's been shot since I bought it--will start in any gear.
