OK, Bro. I just recently had the steering column apart in my 91. Your 97 is gonna be a little different but, it still should be the same basic idea. I had to pull my steering wheel off and work my way in thru the horn switch, turn signal switch and hazard switch, to get to the pieces parts holding the lock cylinder in. I believe with the newr style steering column that you can pull the column apart without actually removing the steering wheel. My lock cylinder had a grrove that I had to stick a small screw driver into, releiving pressure on a snap ring of sorts and then my lock cylinder slid right out. The older Renix style XJs have a bolt in the steering column that must be removed to get the lock cylinder out. So, once you get the steering column apart, you're looking for something along the side of the key lock cylinder that is securing it in the column. Sorry this is very vague but, I hope it helps a little.
