Check your fuse, should be either a 10 or a 7.5, had the same problem should help. I know that it may look good but it could still be building to much resistance.

looking into '96 book:
#19 - 5A(tan) - Instrument Panel Lamps, Radio Illumination
*********
also, #17 - 7.7A(violet) - Instrument Cluster Gauges (not sure about that one...is illumination a part of it?)
check both, I guess

I had the same problem a while back. I replaced fuse after fuse and they kept blowing. Finally, after being pulled over for not having any tag lights, I realized that my blown tag light was causing my fuse to blow. I replace my tag light and fuse and I haven't a problem since.
