Next time make sure you read what was posted.

you obviously should NEVER post any information about diesel cherokees again.

they were available in the states from late 1984 models through 1987. somewhat rare, but available. I've worked on both non-turbo, 3 speed automatic STOCK 85 xj, and turbo'd 5 speed STOCK 86 xj 2.1 liter turbo diesels.

I OWN a stock 1986 2.1 liter turbo diesel comanche, that up until the past few weeks was daily driven. It's going under the knife for some much needed restoration.

the winnebago LeSharo used the 2.1l renault turbo diesel from 1983 to approximately 1989.

this is all fact. please refrain from posting any MIS-information that you clearly are not an expert in and have no viable information to give reguarding said subject.

NOW, to the OP.

the 2.5l vm is a VM Motori is an italian motor, and has a bit more electrical components than the renault 2.1l...the 2.1l really only needs power for the shut down solenoid and the starter, while the vm I would assume is not entirely mechanical.

I know they are not directly interchangeable, I know the motor mounts are not the same, turbo is different, block, head, etc. are different. Thus, it cannot be bolted directly in place of your 2.1l turbo diesel.

Be aware that there are 3 different variances of the J8s motor...and the variances have to do with the machining tolerences between the head and the deck, with respect to the manufacturing plant in which they were produced. these 3 variances I speak of have to do with the thickness of the head gasket, and nothing else. the markings which give you information as to which motor this is are located on the rear/transmission side of the head (which also happens to be the number one cylinder...silly french).

To my knowledge, all motor mount bosses are cast into the block the same between applications. I believe there are different oil pans for different applications, which would also mean different oil sumps. they were also offered in a wide variety of other vehicles and agricultural equipment elsewhere in the world.
