XJ Cherokee and ZJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.

2000+ TJ Wrangler and WJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.

XJ/ZJ blocks and 2000+ TJ/WJ blocks do not interchange without significant modifications. (1997-1999 4.0L TJ Wrangler blocks will interchange in XJ/ZJ and visa-versa).

TJ/WJ 4.0L Engine blocks underwent clean sheet design changes effective in the 1999 WJ Grand and 2000 TJ Wrangler. These blocks are not interchangeable with XJ/ZJ engine blocks. The reason is motor mount bolt holes and belt driven accessory mounting bolt holes are in different locations, or not present at all, TJ/WJ vs. XJ/ZJ.

You will need/want to swap over all the electronics from the 2000 engine, including the intake and exhaust manifold. You'll also need to fabricate something to hold the coil packs onto the motor as there are no mounting bosses in the older head. Swap over all the accessory mounting too along with the AC/Alternator mounting bracket.

Physically, yes it would fit, but it's probably the 0331 head so don't even bother. Use the 94 head and get the manifold adapters for it and make some coil pack brackets, easy as pie!

Manifold adapters?

Mounting the coil packs is easy.

The coil packs just need some brackets made from common stuff.

I would go to the parts store and ask to see an intake/exhaust manifold gasket for a 94 and a 2001. I would then compare them. If you can, get a photo and post it up. Let's get this figured out with facts, not conjecture.

Since you haven't listed your location someone might as well mention emissions requirements... in the jurisdiction where I live there are complex requirements with engine swaps, you'd be going from an OBD2 to OBD1 engine and losing 2 of 3 factory emissions control devices.

Not really. Just swap the engine as a long block and use the 2001 manifolds/sensors etc.

Sorry, for some reason I thought the ECU was moving. Reread the thread with a bit of "awake" in me and thats obviously not the case.

There is a dude on Naxja that makes an adapter for the 94 head ( ive been told) to work on your 01 block. The exhaust ports are a different size if im not mistaken they are smaller on the 94 head. Your 01 intake manifold should bolt up. As far as the coil packs go you will need to get creative to mount them bc the 94 head wont have the bosses for the bolts to mount.

Check the gaskets first. If there is much of a difference, get an early manifold and use it.

FWIW, I believe the exhaust ports are smaller on the 2001.

I stopped by the parts store earlier an compared the gaskets....everything lined up alright theres a little size difference in the exhaust ports but i dont think it would hurt it
