I have a 00' cherokee sport. After a few minutes of warming up my jeep starts to make this loud whistling noise. It is the louds in idle and the more i put my foot on the gas the sound dies more and more. Then once my foot is on the gas again it starts to whistle again.

I just bought a new belt.
Please help me, im only 17 and i am just a poor high school kid. At last resort i will go to the mechanic but please just tell exactly what to do. I have heard of other jeep having this problem never talk to anyone that has had the same problem though

im a 91 b in the army (wheel mechanic) but its dificult to diagnose anything withoput being there find the source and check the belt and see if the new one got damaged if so the tensionor.... get some belt dressing and spray some on the belt and pulleys...... and hey man if there is no performance loss in connection with whats causeing the noise dont woory so much its and xj something about them is they will always have issues but they will always get you where you gotta go with those issues

My 98 did that when I put in a new motor. If it sounds like an oversized tea kettle check your manifold bolts. One of mine needed tightening and the sound went away.

There have been a few other threads on here about that annoying whistle in the later models. My wifes 01 does it when I let off the throttle. Several others have had the same thing and a few of them have dured the problem by replacing the intake/exhaust maniflod gasket. They will develop a small leak as they age and the whistle is caused by air being sucked in through the gasket.

First check all the manifold bolts to make sure they are torqued to specs. Don't just slap a socket on them and start cranking down on them either. That will only caused more problems by splitting the gasket from to much pressure or break a bolt off in the head.

Well this sounds interesting. I've got a 2000 xj and it started doing that right after I changed my heater core....I think. I kind of thought it was a vacum leak. Now I'm wondering. Mine whistles when I am at low engine load or off the throttle. Also it was hard to diagnose because it stops about a minute after idleing. A few times I've heard it on the way home and I would pop the hood as soon as I pull in the driveway, then it would stope before I could locate it though. It did sound like it was coming from the intake side.

No worries though because I just got a nice 01' limited to replace her...she's going down the road!

my 01 does this when idling also it sounds like a moderately loud tea kettle

If not the exhaust like stated, my guess would be the tensionor or idler pulleys. Might wanna check them before one lets go and you get stranded. You cans still drive if the exhaust falls off.

It's an intake or vacuum leak. Grab a can of carb/tb cleaner and spray it on your vacuum fittings one at a time. If the RPM's drop then you found your leak. After doing ALL (including that football canister in your front bumper) of the vac fittings start spraying around the intake manifold where it joins the block.

It's best to use a non flammable TB or Brake cleaner for the last part because if your engine is hot and you have an exhaust leak in the manifold you could possibly cause a fire in your engine compartment. Also any non flammable fluids/vapors sucked in through a leak will cause a much more drastic RPM drop than will a flammable liquid. If the leak is bad enough a non flammable liquid may even make your engine stall.

Alright guys! I have figured it out. Well, My mechanic did, he replaced the Idler Pulley (which makes perfect since) and it hasnt whistled yet!
