its common
all chrysler,diff's have that problem,my boss who was a mechanich at a jeep,dodge,dealer said that the most common problem is the carrier bearing,and the seals to leak,myne is in the works right now,i have a 8.25 on my dakota,and had that noise for 1 year till 2 months ago started getting worst so i stopped driveng it and put it in the shop to rebuild my self.

you need a special torque wrench to measure the rotational force and it should be set to 10-20 in-lbs. If you raise the wheels off the ground and get it to the speed where it starts to make noise you can stick a long screw driver near where the bearings would be to find where the noise is coming from
