Lol... I've shifted into four-high at speeds of up to 65 mph rolling... Of course, I'm traveling on snowy hills, on highways, plowing through drifts passing people. I'm surprised I haven't killed myself. As for four-low gear, I find it is a lot smoother when you are rolling at less than five miles per hour. It may say in the owner's manual to stop completely, but it's actually easier on the tc and drivetrain to be rolling on a "loose" surface, like snow, mud, gravel, etc. Many four-wheel-drive veterans will tell you to roll really slowly for the shift because it's easier on the gears to mesh.

Now that you mention it, I do that too - I stop completely to go to N then I let off the brake to let it roll slightly to engage 4L. I can definitely feel what you talking about with the gears meshing easier this way! I haven't been in 4L since winter so it was foggy - been spending way too much time under it instead of in it wheelin this summer! That's what I used to do with my old 4-runner too, let it roll a little. Wow, the more I think about it the more I need to get out on some trail! hehehe

Default 99 Cherokee Sport - Loud clunk coming out of 4L

Did anyone ever come up with a solution for this?
Our '99 Jeep Cherokee Sport has 225k miles and we use 4H intermittently all winter. Last week, noticed a hard clunk sound about 30 seconds after switching from 4H to 2WD. Does this every time now. Mechanic changed a broken U-joint, but seems like it was unrelated as still clunking. Any suggestions. All driving otherwise is regular. No unusual sounds, grinding or gears slipping. Thanks!!
