Looking for a Remanufactured 4.0L for Engine Swap
I am looking at a nice jeep to buy for my Bro-In-Law. I have had my '95 for 4 years now and really like it and he likes my jeep so looking for one for him. And there is a '99 but the engine is shot (a few mechanics, says the seller, say there is rod knock) The price of the jeep is 1,200 right now, will try to get it below $1000 if they do I will need a new engine to put into it. since I don’t have the time to build a stroker for him nor does he have the $$$ for it I was looking for a reman block from one of these places.

A few questions about the above places, are there any I should avoid? And the "331" head listed will that still be the same evil 0331 head that has all the problems with cracks or would this be a new pore/mold? Are there any other places that people know of or have had experience buying a full reman engine from?
Thanks!

I replaced mine with a re manufactured motor from a local place.. mines a 2000 and had the 0331 head casting. Your 1999 will probably be different and fine, in 2000 they came out with the new distributor-less ignition, which required a little change in the head casting...which of course some had issues if overheated and at higher mileage.

Thanks, I was some what concern on the block because it seams to be a same build with just a note if it was distributer or coil pack. and I know that, that "head" has cause many a jeep owner issues.

The 1999 has the 0630 cylinder head.
The "infamous" 0331 head is on the 00-01 XJ engines.
So there is little chance of getting the 0331 head on any of these engines, but ask to make sure as you do NOT want it.
I have not had any personal experience with any of those companies, but be sure to do your homework if you are ordering from them. Maybe some with some experience will chime in.
Another thing to consider is searching for a salvage yard engine. Plug and play and you're on the road. A very economical way to re-power with minimal investment.
I cannot remember how many salvage yard engines I've installed in 38 years of wrenching, and have only had bad luck one time.

Just as an FYI I've run across 3 jeeps in the last few months that were being sold because of Rod Knocks.
I know for sure 2 of them were the famous (or infamous) cracked flex plate. To the untrained ear it really does sound like a thrown rod.
If the body is in great shape $1000 is a great price for a 99 XJ.
Pull the engine first (or drop the transmission) and check the flex plate.
You may save yourself a lot of money!

Replaced the engine in my 2001 Cherokee with an engine from TitanEngines.com and I have been very happy with it. They advertise stroker engines, however, I wanted a stock replacement and they built just what I wanted. I highly recomend them.

How much did the stock engine build end up costing? and what did you end up replacing during the swap between blocks?
