'91 all the way! With abs just cause it doesnt have the stupid CAD and has the stronger front axle shafts. Yes I know the bendix abs system isnt that great, but it has hella more braking power than the non abs system.
Just my 2 cents though. I love my '91!

generally people like the 4th quarter production 96-99 cherokees for a few reasons:
in 95 the dana 30 front axle got a little beefier
in late 96 switched to the 29 spline 8.25 axle (much stronger)
99 emissions laws caused jeep to put more restrictive catalytic converters on it, so jeep upgraded their intake manifold to make up for the loss of horsepower. Result: put a 99+ intake manifold on a 98 or older cherokee and get an extra 20-25 hp.
hope this helps
personal opinion: get a manual transmission, the AX-15 is the best transmission jeep ever used.

i have both a renix and a 92 H.O.
the 92 goes like a scared rabbit.
but in reality, i'd say the 99 year is probably the best year. has the newer body style, cupholders, obdII, distributor, hp d30, 297 u-joints, 29 spline 8.25 NON ABS!!!, large brake booster.
go with either the 5 speed, or auto. personally, i like the auto for wheeling, but still do very well with my 5 speed tj.

jeeps are built, not bought.... aren't they?
What about the saying "jeeps are built, not bought". All the things that later models have can be done to earlier models, well im not sure about the renix engines, never had one. Like I have a 93, I can easily replace the rear axle for the 29 spline 8.25, which im in the process of, I have a 00+ intake manifold, the only things I have left to upgrade could be the beefed up axles and u-joints for the dana 30.
However newer models do have a different body style and little things inside the cab that make it more comfortable, which is nice.
I guess what im trying to say is that I've seen this debate hundreds of times. Cherokees have changed a lot since their introduction in 1984, each year has different pros and cons. But its very easy to change things to these xj's. I very much enjoy building my own cherokee something unique that I put together, thats why I like the saying jeeps are built, not bought.
To the OP, if I were you get the nicest, cleanest jeep you can find that’s in your price range. Almost everything on the xj can be changed, so don’t get caught up in the whole which year is the best. I guess if your not interested in working on your Cherokee I’d just buy a newer one, but where’s the fun in that?

+1 on the 91. but DONT GET ANYTHING OLDER THAN THAT!
ive had more Renix problems that no one on these forums or myself can fix. Read my posts. and its SLOW. HO motors are a lot quicker in my opinion i drove one, there quick. compared to my 89.

why not? my 87 is great. i think any cherokee with the 4.0 and auto is the way to go. or, even the newer models with the new 4 cylinder is pretty good. i've had a 95 and a 99 or 2k plus my current 87 and all have been great jeeps.

91 (pretty sure) they started the HO engines. They were all HO after that point....and if you wanna get technical I believe in 99 they started what they called the "power tech" 4.0.
It has a few more hp, and like stated more emissions stuff. Not really TOO much different than the previous HO years though.
