To replace crank sensor or not?...
Buddy of mine said he had the same '96 XJ 4.0 as me and suggested I should go ahead and pro-actively replace my crank sensor as his went bad. I've had mine 10 years now from 88,000 mi when I got her til 170,000 miles now.
Should I go ahead and replace the crank sensor? Seems like a fairly inexpensive piece and I'm guessing it won't have to be replaced again.

Break it first. You need OEM or dealer for that part and it's roughly $80-100.
I can say it probably won't give you much warning before it goes but I am a proponent of the old adage "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Don't worry, your XJ will eventually need money spent on it

Do you drive your Jeep until it runs out of gas then fill it up?

You could go in between. Buy it now, keep it in the Jeep, and wait for it to fail.
But then you are risking being stuck by the side of the road, and if Murphy has his way, that will happen when you are on your way to an interview for your dream job.
Got towing?
