Hey guys, I have a quick question. I really messed up when I was putting my timing chain back in. Have everything all rtv'd up and ready to go on. gasket is stick to timing cover, rtv is on block. put timing chain on and whet to grab bolt to put in the camshaft......... bolt was upside down, and the pin and spring fell out. I found the pin, but no spring!!!!!!! wtf do i do now?!?!?!?! i think the spring rolled into the frame next to steering box..... im an idiot. Can the parts sit out over night with the rtv on them and be ok? i really dont want to buy new gaskets again, but will if i have to I guess.

no, not that easy. I have the airbox out and had the bolts sitting on the little ledge in the opening. When I picked up the bolt i rotated it too much and the pin and the spring fell out down the crack between the steering gearbox and the frame rail. the pin wedged between the frame rail and the steering box, but i have no idea where the spring went. there is a hole right there in the frame rail that I think it might have fallen into. Thats all i can come up with. I felt all around the pump, all on the ground. damn thing is just gone.

One of the most valuable tools in my box is a magnet on an extendable wand... cost about 2$. I've found more dropped stuff in my engine compartment by putting it in and moving around that I couldn't see than I care to mention.

Gasket + gasket sealer. Or RTV, which is essentially form-a-gasket.
RTV can leave gaps. Or set up unevenly. Excess can break off and clog cooling passages or oil pickup screens.
You know guys, sometimes there is a better way of doing things. I have used RTV and a gasket in the past like you all have, but I won't do it any more. Using both is a misapplication.

I don't like RTV for anything. I use stuff called Titeseal, if the gasket really needs help...
