Keyless Entry
I'm looking to find out where the Keyless Entry Receiver is located in my 2001 Cherokee Sport. I just got it 2 weeks ago. I have checked my VIN# with the dealer and they tell me that i have Keyless entry. Thanks!

I had thought about trying to redo the infared system on my 89, but it just didnt seem worth it to me. On my 89 its above the front windshield and looks like a black box.
I would like to find out where to find these at on the newer ones though. That could come in handy.

On the 97+'s the receiver is in the overhead dome light (or if you have one, it's in the overhead console). Pull the light down and you'll the a circuit board, that's your Keyless Entry.

Thanks Tim! I found the board. Is there an easy way to test it? The reason i ask is because a local lock smith company has a remote for $30 but he was not able to program it. The local Jeep dealer want $60 for the remote and $40 for programing. I'm trying to decide if i should just pay the dealer a $100 or try and save $30.

On a Cherokee however, I have not reprogrammed them. All i've done is swap them out with a known working board with remotes to troubleshoot one we thought got fried in an accidental short.
My advice to you, search around on these boards and other XJ boards (like www.naxja.org) and Ebay for the remotes. $60 for a remote is insane! I paid about $15+ Shipping for the one I replaced on our Liberty, and I got it off Ebay. Make sure you get one of the round remotes (99+), as the 97-98's had square remotes and i'm almost positive they were a different frequency and not interchangeable.

Here's something I found on google..
and
Also the FSM says you need a DRB scan tool to program the proper codes into the remote transmitter.. Here's a quote from the FSM..
So my guess is unless this locksmith has the proper tools off to the dealer or one of the many online shops that sell aftermarket ones.. All they needs is the code for your keyless entry receiver.
Sit inside the vehicle with all the doors closed.
Place ignition in the OFF position.
Open the driver's door. Leave Open.
Move the mechanical door lever to the LOCK position.
Turn the ignition to the RUN position.
Aim the transmitter at the Keyless Entry receiver and press Lock button.
Hold for five seconds until the door locks cycle.
Turn ignition OFF within 20 seconds.
