Default Low Temp Thermostat and Emissions

So, trying to get my 86 Cherokee to pass the CA smog test.

About to try my first retest. Done a bunch of work and one last part I'm wondering about before I spend on a retest.

Pretty sure the previous owner had a low temp thermo put in. How will this effect emissions? I know higher temps usually mean more complete combustion. Should I replace it with a stock thermo?

I have a 95, no CA smog and tried a low temp thermostat. It ran like a full diaper, put the right one in. The lower temp thermostat never lets things get to normal operating temp so your engine runs rich trying to get the engine to temp.

Your 86 is a carbureted 2.8 v6. Those are known for having a lousy carburetor. They wear out at the throttle shaft bushings, they have a failure prone TPS that is the body of the carb. Being an early electronically controlled engine, the coolant temperature sensor plays a pretty big role in the fuel mapping.

GM supplied the 2.8 liter first gen 60 degree V6 to Jeep so look for 2.8 Chevy when shopping for aftermarket parts.
