I had the same prob.. take those 2 wires off and connect them to a fuse. I used a 15 amp.. Started rite up and is still running good on that fuse.. Yes I did try to replace the ceramic resistor first but no luck.

Default anti thef or relay

it the anti theft system it happend to my jeep and it aint the side doors its the lift gate unlock and lock it but frist you need to get under the dash in the driver side you need to look for a purple wire with yellow strip you need to make sure the battery is unhooked the you strip a little pice all the way around then you need to get a pice of wire and tie in to the purple wire with yellow strip and ground it out to one of the bolts under the dash

this may sound crazy but it will work and if not it could be a relay does the dash light and headlights go nuts and flash like crazy if so this will have you up and runing

good luck man i know its aggervating but youll get it

I have a 93xj 4.0L, HO, exact problem as described in this thread, I'm going out to a junk yard tomorrow to try and get another ECU, what if any other years would be compatible with my XJ? There's a series of numbers on the ECU... 56027 followed by 3 larger numbers 360, and the manufacture date, hope this helps. Can you folks tell me what I should look for or have to match in part or full that would work.
Thank you so much in advance.

You need a ECM with the exact same part number. My XJ was a 93, and my buddys was a 93. Luckily the part numbers were the same. However, different things like an automatic or anti theft will change the part number. Go on Ebay and type in your part number. That's how I found a replacement for mine.

Default Fixed the problem!

This same thing happened to my 91 jeep xj last night after work. First i pulled the spark plugs and they all had spark then i pulled the fuel line and fuel was pumping out of it. So thanks to this forum i tried the next easiest thing which was the fuel pump ballast resistor on the drivers side attached to the inner fender. I disconnected the two wires and put a 20 amp fuse between them and my jeep fired right up and stayed on. I would suggest that anyone with this problem tries that first it could save a few hours of cussing and screaming... And jumping your battery every few tries. Just my $. 02

Heres my problem - The Jeep starts and immediately dies. If i give it throttle it still dies. Sometimes when I give it throttle it will rev quick before dieing. It only stays running for about 1 second and rarely stays running for up to 3 seconds. Here's what i have checked.

1.Crank position sensor (installed new one, no help, put old one back in)
2.Throttle Position Sensor (Installed new one, no help, old one back on)
3.IAC (removed and cleaned)
4.MAP Sensor (Unplugged to run on default mode)
5.Checked the 6 pin relay under passenger side dash
6.Checked the resistor on the drivers side fender by twisting the wires together to bypass the relay/resistor (whatever it is)
7.Checked fuel pressure. It reads 32psi with the key turned to the on position. when i start it, it quickly jumps to 42psi, then when the motor dies, it returns to 32psi.
8.I read somewhere the cat gets plugged so I split the exhaust before the cat but no help.
9.New Cap, rotor, plugs, wires.
10.Swapped Fuel Pump Ballast Resistor from running Jeep
11.Fuel pump relay, tried 2 others.
12. WILL STAY RUNNING ON STARTER FLUID
13. Brand new fuel pump
14. Fuel Regulator doesn't leak
Anyone else have any ideas? I'm pretty lost on this.
Just for the record, I sold my friend my 91 XJ and he was having the same exact problem. Tested pretty much everything on this list (didn't mess with the fuel system at all though, and didn't replace cap, rotor, etc.) and it ended up being his ECU/PCU/PCM as well. Got lucky and found an exact copy of the XJ at the junkyard and pulled the part for $50.

Additionally, while troubleshooting the problem, I found out how to ground out the security system because it was proving to be a pain in the rear.

Good luck to anyone else with this problem!

Sentry anti theft Skim module ect
I had this problem on and off for a while. every few months it would start and shut off after approx 3 seconds. then would be fine for a while/month or 3. Then it started doing it every other day, sometimes wouldnt restart for 1-3 hours. Well, with all the suggestions - "you need PCM , Skim module, new key bla bla bla" Remove your steering cover halves (one phillips screw bottom) and pull apart plastic halfs. (It will take a good tug to overcome plastic tabs, hence you wont brake anything) Look at wires coming out of skim module, follow down..when i moved them around (going down the column, tied them upward with a zip tie to some other wires above, it stopped doing it for months. It sometimes comes back very seldom, and I just move the skim module wires around and it leaves for months. I think its just a broken wire inside insulation from skim to computer that worked and worked from moving tilt steering wheel up and down for years. I am a big believer in ---> lotta times its a simple inexpensive thing and I dont shotgun expensive parts. Its the wiring charlie. Hope this helps some poor old cheap sob like me.... Peace.

was very much like me and 2k later I have fixed the problem for under $100 ignition switch the electrical part under key you can pull it out with a t20 and pull cover off look at the copper and see if any of it is burnt if so that may be your problem also after installing it. the blasted thing will start then shut off don't bother yelling at it like I did simply take the key out of ignition and get out of jeep walk to passenger side and lock the door with key then unlock it wait 1 min then start jeep problem should be fixed. the deal with the gas is that pump is on but if key for some reason shorts out pump doesn't know to turn back on hope this helps you.

So you ground out the wire, hook the battery back up? Then unlock their hatch with key?

Default 07 Commander starts and imeediately dies

This morning I read this thread. My 07 Commander is doing the same thing. I replaced my key fob battery two weeks ago and found the bracket that holds the battery in place in the key fob to be loose. It worked until I dropped my keys yesterday. I took the key fob apart and found the bracket and battery loose. I needed my solder sucker and some time this morning to remove the excess solder and resolder the bracket to the circuit card. I put the key covers back together without the circuit card and tried to leave. The Jeep started and immediately died. I cancelled my appointment, went and got my solder removal tools, resoldered the bracket, inserted the watch battery, reassembled the key and started the truck. It runs just fine now.

Is your ANTITHEFT system light going off when you crank it?
My jeep is doing the same thing. I have recently Replaced the ignition cylinder and I mistakenly replaced it for a non-chiped cylinder.
There is a chi[ in the ignition cylinder and one in the key. when they recognize each other it allows the car to stay running.
If someone tries to steal it with another key or by any other mean the antitheft system will activate and shut off the engine.
GOOD LUCK!
NOW I can't seem to find a chiped cylinder if anyone can HELP!!!

I have the same problem 95 xj sport. I believe it is the ignition, a short in the RUN position. Start it and hold the key on START and if it continues to run, you can give it gas even, but when you release the key it dies.
