This is a work in progress, so if anyone sees glaring omissions or errors, PM me and I will get it fixed. 2) Not all of these codes are relavant to Jeeps, but rather to Chrysler vehicles in general. 3) Computers (in this case the ECU) only do what you tell them, so they might not see problems which do exist, or they might see problems that do not exist, or they might indicate a problem which is in reality caused by some other component. Code readers have the ability to glean much more accurate information from the ECU than the methods outlined below. Therefore, this listing should only to be used as an aid in troubleshooting and NOT as a repair guide/manual. ***END DISCLAIMERS*** Intro and Notes So, before outlining the proceedure (a.k.a. "key trick") to get the codes, a few things to note: 1) You may have to set the parking brake for the codes to show 2) On older models, the blink-spacing is not always perfectly uniform, so if you see 23 23, it's probably just a single 55 since codes are not repeated (55 is end of codes - it's normal) 3) On newer models with a digital odometer, the codes are usually displayed on the odometer rather than blinking the check engine light. 4) When the computer indicates major failure, it can activate "Limp In" mode, which guesses about data to compensate for sensor failure, allowing you to get the car to a mechanic. One major symptom of this is losing third and/or fourth gear on autos. The "Key Tricks" Older (OBDI) models - Start with the ignition off. Within five seconds, switch the key on, off, on, off, on. ("On" is NOT "Start" and "Off" is NOT "Lock"). The "check engine" light will flash. Count the flashes. Each code is a two digit code, so a (for example) 23 would be FLASH FLASH (pause) FLASH FLASH FLASH (long pause). It will never flash more than 9 times, so watch for those pauses! Newer (OBDII) models - Put the key into the ignition, push down the odometer reset button, then turn the key to RUN with your finger on the button - and then release the button. The odometer will go through 1111111 through 999999, then display the car's serial number. It will then show the error codes (it might show them starting with P). If this method does not work, try the OBDI method. Older Model Computer Codes (OBDI) - IMPORTANT! Codes may be different for newer vehicles starting circa 1996. 11 No ignition reference signal detected during cranking OR timing belt skipped one or more teeth; OR loss of either camshaft or crankshaft position sensor. 12 Battery or computer recently disconnected 13 MAP sensor or vacuum line may not be working 14 MAP sensor voltage below .16V or over 4.96V 15 No speed/distance sensor signal 16 Loss of battery voltage detected with engine running 17 Engine stays cool too long (bad thermostat or coolant sensor?) OR 17 (1985 turbo only): knock sensor circuit 21 Oxygen sensor signal doesn't change (stays at 4.3-4.5V). If you get poor cold driveability, stumbling and bucking, and acceptable warm driving with poor gas mileage (a drop of 10 mpg or more), that is usually the O2 sensor. I don't know. 703 Brake switch circuit information seems wrong. 711 Based on the transmission temperature and its operations, it looks like the transmission temperature sensor's gone bad. 712 Transmission fluid temperature sensor voltage wrong. 713 Transmission fluid temperature sensor voltage wrong. 720 The Output Shaft Speed Sensor doesn't match the reported vehicle speed. 740 The engine's running faster than it should for these speeds, so I think thetorque convertor clutch lock-up system is bad 743 Torque converter clutch (part throttle unlock) solenoid circuit problem - shift solenoid C electrical fault 748 Governor Pressure Solenoid circuit problem (Transmission relay circuit problem in Jeep RE transmissions) 751 Overdrive override switch has been pressed for over five minutes. I tried this technique on my 1990 Jeep Cherokee 4wd and It didnt work. I took the panel off to see if the lights were out. I replaced them and still nothing. While I was replacing them I shined a flashlight through the screen and all I have is the red brake light, 4 part time, 4 full time, a yellow hollow triangle, check emissions, a seatbelt and check Anti lock. I didnt see an engine or check engine or anything. btw I looked on the door. its a 1990 but was manufactured on 8/89. idk if that helps.

My 98 xj cl***ic, reads no codes both with my scan tool and with the odo button and key method. Yet for some reason my check engine light is still on. My obdII scanner even says theres no problem but still the damn light. (Im OCD). any help would be apreciated. How do I get the darn light to turn off.

Close. 1984-1990 w/AMC engine are pre-OBD.

1984-1986 w/GM V6-173 are OBD-I (GM control setup.)

1991-1995 are OBD-I (Chrysler)

1996-2001 are OBD-II (Chrysler)

Are you sure about the years? The 1991 4.0 cherokee is pre-OBD (renix) on some manual i have. The only difference is the newer style connectors and wiring.

According to my 1991 FSM, it's OBD-I. The 1990 FSM shows RENIX.

Per recent Jeep history, Chrysler bought AMC/Jeep from AMC/Renault in mid-1988, took over production about a month later, and the intervening time was spent adapting the ChryCo control systems to work with the AMC inline six. Once it was made to work, the OBD-I system was put in the XJ and MJ, and the OBD-I 242ci six was put into the YJ (it had the 258ci up to that point, but I don't recall if it was directly OBD-I at that point, or still pre-OBD.)

The reason for the "flyer" on early years (1984-1986 w/GM engine) was because the engine and control system were bought entire from General Motors until the 242ci six was ready for production.

I think there are some 1991 built still with renix, or maybe SBEC without diagnostic connector, at least overseas. I have a match for a "SENSOR, knock" PN 3300 2933 in the 1991-1993 parts catalog.
