Interior Door Panel Removal
Is there a write up on how to get the interior door panels off on a 97-01 XJ around here somewhere? I did a search with no luck. I found one an older generation of XJ but not the newer one. I was just looking for some direction before I start pullin it apart, cause I'm pretty impatient and tend to break things.
My front passenger power window motor (on a 98 XJ Sport) seems to have crapped out on me and need to replace it. Any help would be appreciated.

Pretty easy, remove the philips screw in the door handle and there 2 big philips screws in the lower part of the arm rest. Use a trim stick to pop the lower corner loose and then just work your way around the door, unhook the link rods for thr lock and latch and it is off.

They have a plastic clip that rotates off the rod. Look at the end then just push the clip off the rod then pop the rod out of the bushing part of the clip that is in the part the rod goes into.
Here is a good pic I found on google of the clip. The clip is the brown piece. The clip is also the bushing the rod rides in.

Oh and the door panel clips in from above on the door itself. Once you have the panel fasteners popped off, the handle screws out, and the screw out on the opener handle trim, you need to lift the whole panel up and off the door. Make sure the window is up for easier handling. Might have to pull the speaker first. Depends.

the power window/lock panel should just unclip like any other wire harness. there may be a red or blue plastic lock clip you'll have to remove before the harness will release.
but as for the inner door handle, it usually just stays attached to the rods and simply can fit it through the hole in the door panel. no need to unhook any rods. every one i've done anyways. pre 97 xj and any zj i've done anyways.
it is a little tricky getting the door panel to release along the upper door rail along the window opening. you will want to keep the panel as close to the door and lift it straight up. it's a bit tricky to get back on too. but easy enough to figure out.
oh, and you don't necessarily have to remove the whole panel to get to the door speakers either. just pop the lower panel clips to get to the speaker. remove speaker to check for a loose wire/connector.

that's a good question. i'm not sure simply because of the arm rests.
i know pre 97 there were 2 different styles of arm rests. one flat one with 2 bolt mounts, ( __ ) and one that had a grab type handle with 3 bolt mounts ( __/ ).

You can look between the crank and door panel and see the retainer clip. You can use a small flathead screwdriver to push it off the crank or get a tool from an auto parts store that makes it way easier.

I was curious about this as well. I have a 2001 limited with the very small speaker in the corner of the door. The speaker goes in and out quite a bit so I think a wire might beloose. Do I have to remove the door trim to get to this speaker to check the wiring?
