Default ignition cylinder

Has anyone ever put a new ignition cylinder into their collumn? I bought one because I broke both my keys trying to turn my xj on, and i dont feel like screwing with the old one anymore.

I am planning on tackling a project on my XJ in that same area, tomorrow. I have to install a new wiper/washer switch inside the steering column. I will have to pull the steering wheel and carefully work my way into where the wiper/washer switch is. Good luck on your project. You may not have to rip the whole steering apart like I have to do, just to get the ignition lock cylinder out.

I already have the steering wheel and hub off, now the thing that is showing is the ring that locks the steering wheel in place when the jeeps off. thats the thing I dont know how to get off.

That one is a little tricky. There is a special tool that you are supposed to use but, basically you need to push in on that ring. It is spring loaded. While pushing in on that metal ring you have to pop the little snap ring off that holds it on the hub. PITA I know it....

I have to push on the little metal ring, as in the one that is wrapped directly around the shaft? then where will the snap ring be?

Sorry, the big flat metal ring that has the notches cut in it for the steering wheel lock. You have to push in on that then you will see the small snap ring on the hub that you will need to pop off.

I have a quick question, I have an automatic transmission, and yesterday i put in a new lower tranny line. while I was under there I noticed my transmission says Aisin 5. I thought that was a manual tranny(ax5)?

Not sure what that Aisin 5 stuff is all about. If you have a 4.0 and an automatic in your 90 XJ, you have an AW-4.Good tranny
