In the process of bringing my old XJ back to life I am discovering many parts that have been "scavenged" by "friends". Anyhow, I am putting a new ignition switch in and can't figure out what specifically is the actuator rod. The manual has no pictures and when turning the key, there is no movement under the column. Any help and/or pics would be greatly appreciated.

the rod swivles off the key switch and run paralel to the colum itself inside, the hooks to a thing maggiger lol dont know what its called. anyways that will make contact with the switch down below. the kinda a pain in the butt to even remove, iv done a few and the always wind up destroyed. best of luck. have u tried to google a pic yet?

Yeah, but nothing that actually shows it. I need to buy the dealer manuals me thinks. You know its bad enough that parts were scavenged, but they could have at least left the bolts. I need to buy a bolt assortment. On the bright side they took the heater core hoses and pressure bottle assembly, so now I have an excuse to upgrade to an open system.

So, the actuator rod seems to break rather easily?

No it lasts a very long time. Mine is 19 years old and still in good shape. You might check Google on the replacement of that rod. In early Jeeps the whole column is a GM so that is where you should direct your search if you have an older (Renix) Jeep.

the rod you need runs parallel on top of the column. you can access it from behind the dash cover above the column without having to remove anything else.

caged........I think he posted that someone prior to his ownership had removed the rod and he needs to find one and re-install it.

well in this case someone else removed it for me. I had given the jeep to my brother, he let it sit, during which another person decided to use it as their personal parts vehicle, till I reclaimed it, minus several parts.

I will hit up some searches for the GM column. Guessing it is the same used on the S-10s of the era? What about full size?

i understood he was replacing the ignition and was wondering where to hook up the actuator rod.
if he needs one, i can send him one. i have a few.

Thanks, let me look closely tonight, I had reached around the column and saw a cable, but it didn't appear to have a rod of any sort attached to it. I may have to hit you up for a actuator rod.

If you could see the under side of the dash. He just yanked everything out, plugs hanging down, ignition switch, ignition control module, danging to the floor. It had me pretty hot. Its going to take a little more effort than I had first thought, but once I get everything bolted back in I can see what needs replaced from there.

I've been having troubles with my ignition in my 91 xj. I haven't been able to get the key to the off position. I assumed that it might be the a worn out key cylinder... okay the cylinder broke when I was trying to force it back into the off position. But the new cylinder hasn't fixed the problem. I took the ignition switch off the column to see if it's sticking, but it moves back and forth without a problem. With the switch out I still can't get the key to the off position. So I assume the problem is with the linkage. Any insights or suggestions on how to sort this out?

my most recent replacement column is starting to do that too.
i just unscrewed the plastic bezel trim and pulled it off just slightly to access the ignition rod, then just stick my finger in there and feel for the square lead like part on the actuator rod, then i just rotate it a bit and pull back to help the ignition turn to the off position to get the key out.

i leave my bezel loose just for this reason.
