Default I need HUGE help

Ok, so this is the story, I have a 96 cherokee 4.0 ho auto, it had a np242 it went out, so i went and bought a 87 np231 for $60 figure out the input splines are 21 and mine is 23. so i went and found a 2002 242j for $75 correct spline count and swapped it in and the shifter is all wrong cant figure out which way is 4x4 or 2wheel. So my question is now can I take the input shaft out of the 242j or np242 if not damage and swap it into the np231. Cause the 242j is not workin and i have no speedo now and the rubber deal on the out put shaft got ate up and it leaks. now i have really no more money for t-case's so if any of you guys know if i can swap the input shafts around it would be great.

I can't help with the input shafts but, if you jack up one of the front tires you can turn the front driveshaft and see if your in 2wd or 4wd

EDIT: the output shaft seal is only $6.00 +or- at autozone

you can swap your tcase iput into the 87. the 87 has the vaccum stuff on it im assuming. and you wont have the electric to turn on your 4x4 light but it will work

zj guys have alot of good input on this casue to sway a 231 into one of there rigs they have to use their 249 input. so try searching 231 into grand swaps and should give you a good idea

the NP231 and NP242 are different, your best bet is to jack the front end up with the 242 in and unhook the transfercase shifter lever and move the transfercase lever to figure out where 2 wheel and 4X4 is if all else fails I have a 23 spline input shaft that will fit the np231 if ya want it

I dont remember what all grands used the NP249 I know the V8s did and there are a lot of 231s with 23 spline im actually suprised you found a 21 spline. My jeep uses a 21 spline and when it came time to replace mine all i found were 23 spline so i just swapped out imputs so it would work for me
