The problem I've found is that my gas light will come on and go off several times before it decides it wants to stay on. I'll show 1/4 tank..Then 1/8 tank..then 1/4 tank..then no gas at all..Thne an 1/8..then none

Ive got a giant gas gauge, so i can watch the gas go down as i stomp on it, lol...
but seriously, i get about 450miles to the tank (before i reach the red line) and I never seem to put more than 16 gal in at the most (from middle of the red line), when im at about 380(top of the red line) i put in about 14 gal...
so i dont know that i have a 20gal tank... would love to find out though, w/o being the one that runs out of gas...

I got this low returning to the city. Did almost 500km(310 Miles) on one tank. I was pretty impressed. I would not recommend ever letting it go down this low.

How far can mine go?
Its got a huge gauge and no light. Plus the gauge has a mind of it own.
Full reads around 3/4 mark, and it will run forever once it hits a 1/4 but I've never put more than 14 or 15gallons in it I can remember.

you more than likely have a 20gal..and 450 miles? routinely? Thats 22.5 mpg which is phenominal! Unless of course u live right next to the highway and take the highway everywhere..I work 45 miles from home..all highway..only 3 miles of it off highway and I barely avg 20mpg..

and my guage might be different than some, I have a 94 Sport..my gas light is on and off around 1/8 tank..but it turns on when I go uphill or around a corner as the gas sloshes around haha..I'm guessin its 1/8 tank..roughly 2.5 gallons..to those that say it comes on with 5 gallons left..youre light turns on at 1/4 tank? That doesnt make sense..

After driving across Canada in my loaded down 92 2wd, I was consistantly getting 550kms(340mi) before looking for a gas station. I always had a couple gallons left so 400 miles wouldve been possible.
Thats driving at 110-120km/h (68-75) with about 1200lbs of cargo stuffed everywhere.
My gauge also never really went right to the F mark, and moved down to 3/4 pretty quickly.

Thought I'd give this thread a bump- I have an 01 2WD XJ, and according to my Factory Service Manual, the only size tank on these is 20 Gallons. For some reason, my gas light always comes on whenever I've used up around 15 gallons.

It is suppose to come on with only a gallon or two left. Mine never says I have less the a quarter of a tank left.. and I found out the hard way that it was very inaccurate. The floater in the tank that tells the gauge how much is left gets very inaccurate after 16 years or so.
