Default How to Identify Your Transmission

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS

AW-4 Transmission


The AW-4 is a 4-speed, electronically controlled automatic transmission. The identification plate is attached to the right side of the transmission case.

42RE/44RE/46RE Transmission


The 42RE/44RE/46RE is a 4-speed fully automatic transmission with electronic governor. The ID numbers are stamped on the case's left side just above the oil pan.

42RH/46RH Transmission


The Chrysler 42RH/46RH automatic transmission is a 4-speed fully automatic unit with an overdrive 4th gear. The ID numbers are stamped on the case's left side just above the oil pan. 30RH/32RH Transmission


The Chrysler 30RH/32RH transmission is a 3-speed automatic transmission with a gear type oil pump. The ID numbers are stamped on case's left side just above the oil pan.

can i substitute a 42RE for a 44RE in a 1996 jeep Grand Cherokee?

You might try the Grand Cherokee section....Until somebody more in the know comes along, I'm pretty much clueless, but maybe, might want to use your speed sensor?

No, the bellhousing is different between the two. The 42re was used with the 4.0, the 44re was used with the 5.2. The bolt patterns and starter locations are different.

I can't see the transmission code on my transmission. Is there any other way I can tell which transmission I have? My neutral safety switch just went out and there are 2 different ones for this year and model.

For a 98 XJ, with a 4.0L and automatic, it will be an AW4. But the tag wont read "AW4". The tag will read 40-43LE for 2wd, or 40-30LE for 4wd. Both use the same NSS shown.
