Default 4wd not working

Hey guys so I have a 90 cherokee and for some reason the 4wd doesnt work when i get in sticky situations my front wheels just do not spin. heres some other problems. The part time light will come on sometimes in 2wh if i am not on the throttle. if i am in 4wd and take it out i will drive for a while then all the sudden it will make a griding noise that gets lower and lower in tone and then a pop that can be felt throughout the vehicle. It also will burnout in 4wd which doesnt seem right to me. Whats going on here? Where should i start looking?

this ^ check to make sure the linkage isn't bent. when the linkage bends it wont go into the proper gear and will pop out of gear. you can manually shift it into 4wd to make sure its able.

is this a CAD axle or a one piece, if its center axle disconnect, could have a vacuum leak or like torn off

look on the passenger side axle tube on the back side and there would be a little vaccum motor on it that when u engage 4wd it slides a collar over to connect axle together, if u dont see it, u dont have it, or if u know what transfer case you have np321 or np242 i think i messed those numbers up but i am tired so yeah, if u have 4 hi 4 lo and 2h and 4part time on the shifter then its 242 and you wont have cad axle, if u just have 2h 4h 4l u have 231 and u got cad unless someone swapped out the front axle
