as of now I'm pretty close to stock (2" BB) and ive done some pretty crazy things. (river crossings, big rocks, mud holes)

one tip i have is that if you're not sure if you can make it, but want to try anyway, hook your jeep up to a winch (be it hand crank or electric) and a tree/truck/recovery point before you try, so when you dont make it, you dont go racing back down hitting any rock in your way.

I just lifted my XJ, I had it stock since 2002 and it's never let me down. Like people have said the trick is to finesse it where you want to go and a spotter is a huge help.

Oh yeah and put a shackle in your hitch and carry a good tow strap along with some wrenches, sockets ect.

dont worry about not being good in the garage, i first started working on my xj last fall doing very basic stuff, but just the other day i put a bb on my zj, just read up on how stuff is done and listen to those who know how its done.

imo with the xj unless your putting a 3in+ lift on it then stay stock, like said above stock xjs can do a lot of stuff i made it farther on some trails in my 2wd xj than my buddy did in his s10 blazer on 31's. just take it easy at first and get used to how it does and what it can handle.
save up some $ and get your self some skids and recovery points if you dont already have em

Slow and steady wins the race. just take your time when wrenching, wheeling, and writing checks.

heres a pic of my old xj flexin out on a trail

I was amazied by how far I could take my stock XJ, and it's 2WD! I was extremely careful at first when I began wheeling the XJ as I had just sold my 97 TJ with 7" of lift and 33s so I was expecting the little 2WD XJ to have all sorts of issues offroad, but it proved me wrong over and over again. I will say that depending on the terrain around you that you'll probably beat your bumpstops to death, so keep an eye on them as the factory ones have a way of disintegrating with abuse. And trust me, the last thing you need is a control arm coming up and contacting something it shouldn't, like a tranny cooler line... Ask me how I know, lol. One way or the other my stock XJ was about as much fun as I've ever had in a good ol florida sand pit, the low center of gravity made for some most triumphant sand drifting action!

Like said before just take it easy and learn the jeep and what it will do in different types of terrain. After you learn to read the trail it will all become second nature. Some good allterrain tires, recovery points front and rear, a small selection of tools and some well placed body and underbody protection and your good to go. Watch other drivers, if everyone is stopped and someone is trying a hard section of trail get out and watch see how they do it, you can learn a little from this too.

my first ever trip out was in my stock xj, just standard size muds on it [you need them here lol]
did a black rated rout in it no probs, but i would say as has been said before, invest in some under body armour .. at least some type of rock slider.

When I was stock the only times I ever get stuck was from high centering. Just keep good rubber on the ground and stock will do in most cases.

I've been up some pretty good stuff, drove up about a 50 degree slope (sandy!!!) in 2wd, surprised me, that's for sure. I've also made it up some iffy hills in 2wd, and I have yet to find something that I couldn't make it up. I haven't even gotten the chance to use 4lo! I've only been in about a foot of mud and water, but it didn't even hesitate then.

Stock jeeps are amazingly capable, they do better than Hummers!!!

>_< not the military hummers, but from what I've seen, you put a stock XJ against a stock H1-2-3, it'll out do it in most cases.
