For me it would. I have a 91 (4.0) and my cover has no grommets, but since I changed the gasket.....no leaks. Just adding to my knowledge base, as every Jeeper should. You never know when that little tidbit (or any other tidbit) could be helpful on the trail. If there was a particular year grommets were added, or if they really are not needed.......... could mean the difference between a 5 minute fix (or a "fix-it-when-you-get-home") or a 1+hr scrounge/fix.

If I am out wheelin' with buddies, and there's a problem, somebody should have the answer and hopefully some type of a fix/band-aid. We called it "field-expediency" in the military. BTW, I maybe new here to Cherokee Forum, and to Cherokees (only my 2nd one)..........but not so new to 4x'ing, especially group outings. When out in a group, we all depend on each other.

G19, I can only say what I have done with my vehicles the past 20+ years. I grab the ratchet close to the head and tighten from there. When it's tight there all the way 'round, I am satisfied. With a Cover gasket, you do not need to over tighten or crank it down. By not smashing the gasket completely flat, you allow the gasket to do it's job.

If you overtighten, it overcompresses the gasket and leads to early failure. EDIT: I only use cork gaskets on the cover.
