i have the same problem with my turnsignals , heater blower fan , and radio not working sometimes , i tracked it down to the solinoid for the key , its like it doesnt stay i nthe on contact postion , if i play withthe key a little i get them to come back. when its really hot out , if i use the turn signals it cuts it out. roate the key a little and they come back. i picked up a junkyard solinoid and key , but i havent installed it yet. i took apart the steering column , removed the steering wheel and pushed the rotator a bit and it seemed to help for a long time now its starting up again. it might be time to swap in the new key .

I'm having this same problem with the few flashes and then they turn off. Normally when a flasher goes out, it just goes out and won't flash, so I suspected the switch on the steering column. I took the switch apart and cleaned all the contacts and greased/reassebled it but I still have the problem occasionally (this has all developed in the last two days). I'll pick up the flasher and see if that doesn't fix it since it took care of the problem for you. They're only $15 at Advance Auto.
Follow up for others having the same issue:
In the last week or so, my blinkers were acting weird just as described above. Emergency Flashers worked just fine, but blinkers would blink a couple times (if at all) and quit. It was driving me nuts as well. Older blinker flashers, when they'd quit, they'd normally just go dead, and your turn signal would go on, but not blink. So yeah, I was leaning towards the blinker switch as well....
$15 part from Advanced worked for me. (EP27 Electronic Flasher it says on the package. Right down the aisle with the light bulbs, etc.) It's a 5 blade little cube. I just used electrical tape to hold it to the plug below the steering column. (Not sure what the fuzzy tape was or why it was used to hold the original in?) To insure this was the bad part, I tried both the flashers and blinkers before pulling it down - you can also feel it switch as it cycles in addition to hear it. Side note - it's held up by a little plastic clip. Pulling down (and breaking the clip) I somehow managed to scrape the hell outta my thumb on some piece of exposed metal. STUPID of course on a 5 minute job. (Take off the plastic cover below steering wheel - 3 phillips screws - then the metal plate beneath - another 2 screws.)
Hope this helps others.

similiar issue on my 93, when i flip the blinker on, the green arrow stays on along with the actual blinkers outside the car. There is no actual BLINK going on. This is off and on sometimes it works and it seems like it worked great all summer but now that the cold weather is rolling along that it rarely works (blinks) at all anymore.

I had the same problem with my Jeep. The emergency flashers would work but not the turn signals. I replaced everything I could think of and finally found the problem.
It was the clock spring. It mounts to the steering column under the steering wheel. This is the part that allows the steering wheel electrics, including the airbag, to function properly while the steering wheel is being turned. If you have tried everything else, this will most likely be the problem.

Turn signals/hazards problem fixed.
To anyone troubleshooting intermittent turn signals or flashers on their Cherokee:
FYI, I have a 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport, 4WD, 6cyl, 4.0L. A while back, I noticed that from time to time, when I tried to signal left or right, my turn signals would signal properly and then stop. OR, sometimes I would go to signal, get nothing, and then they would come on normally and work fine. It would go for weeks just fine and then I'd get the problem again. The same thing happened with the hazards. They'd come on fine, then shut off.
As time went on, the frequency of the problem increased. As recently as this month, they basically did not work. I'd signal, get one click (if anything) and the nothing. Same with the hazards.
I read this thread and decided to go the route of replacing the Hazard Warning/Turn Signal Flasher. I found the $15.99 part at AutoZone. Part number EP27. I followed directions on this thread to get under the steering column area, found the old one, and replaced it. I went to try the signals and hazards. No change, still did not work properly, same intermittent problem.
So I do a little more research. I decide to go after the Turn Signal (multifunction) Switch on the steering column. I chose this route because my problem was with my signals AND hazards, and coincidentally, on my year/make/model, the multifunction switch incorporates BOTH the signals and hazards. The part itself operates signals, 4 way hazards, steady brights(when you push away from you), and temp brights (when you pull toward you). Again, AutoZone, $34.99, part number SW1940.
I waited till I had some downtime on a weekend. I got a little help from my Haynes manual and Google regarding multifunction switch R & R. It took me about 30 minutes to get to it. Once it was in place, BEFORE putting everything back together, I tried the signals and...
FIXED!
I had everything back together in about an hour.
Nothing is worse than a phantom electrical problem, so I wanted to share my experience for others. I hope someone finds this helpful. Good luck.
Regards,
Mark

Thank you all!
3 hours ago my 2001 Jeep Cherokee developed the exact same problem. Almost got rear ended by a few vehicles because my radio was blasting and I didn't notice the directional signal wasn't working. Stopped at a wifi hot spot and searched of an answer using my laptop. Found this site and thread. Went to Autozone and picked up an EP27 and installed it in 1/2 hour. Dang fuzzy tape! Have to thank everyone here for saving my beezer. Heck, I was on my way home from riding my bicycle and had it on a bike rake directly behind my read hooked up to my tow hitch. It could have been a very bad day.

alright I just read this thread from start to finish because I am looking for an answer because my 95 is doing the same thing. I just want to make sure I've got it straight.
1. Replace the flasher relay.
if that don't work
2. Replace the multifunction switch.
if that don't work?
3. ?

fixed turn signal problem
89 xj Laredo, four ways worked, left turn signal worked but right signal just lit up and stayed solid. Also the right dash arrow was lit solid when the headlights were on. Went to Auto Zone and replaced the turn signal flasher part #LL552 it's located on the fuse panel at ur left foot...the round cylinder on the bottom left. The on on the upper right is the signal flasher for the emergency lights. Pulled the old one out, plugged the new one in and good to go! $8 fix.

I am having the same problem except my brake lights don't work either. I have running lights and headlights just no turn signals or brake lights. I have no idea what to do to fix it. I have replaced every fuse under the dash and still nothing.

89 Jeep Cherokee Laredo Turn Signals & Hazard Lights Not working
Hi All,
I sold my '92 Jeep and bought an '89, and it has electrical issues up the wazoo.
So, what is the cure when your headlights work, but turn signals and flashers don't? Fuses look good, but relays, seems you have to replace them, I don't know how to test them.
How has anyone else fixed this?
TYIA.
