I have flushed the radiator and hoses within the last 2 months so I will now try fixing the thermostat

under your hood there should be a valve in the lines that connect to the heater core looks similar to this see if the lever moves when you turn the heat on its aheater control valve

'98+ don't have that valve. If the temp gauge is showing normal, no heater is probably due to a clogged heater core.

Do the 98+ XJ's have a heater door like my 90? If the cable comes disconnected when its in the closed position on mine, you'll never get heat. You can see it on the bottom of the heater box just above the right side of the tranny hump. Mine has a little bar that comes out and when its pointing towards the pass. door, the heater door is open.

Don't know if the door is the same or not.....but at least similar, I would think. That valve shown above is under the hood close to the firewall on the passenger side.

yes the newer 97+ XJs do have the door. its call a bend door and you also have the bend door actuator, which is the motor that open and closes the door. its located under the glovebox to the left. easy way to see if its working is to place on the pastic piece that looks like a flat head screwdriver would go in. move your cold to hot *** to both setting one at a time. if you feel it move its working. now a good way to also tell if the door is ot broke, remove the actuator with a 5/16 socket then use the plastic *** that comes out with it and manuel move it by hand.

98's have a cable operated blend door I believe. Late production '98's may have the electric actuator(?). In any case the OP should get a helper to move the temp selector while he's under the dash looking at the cable crank/electric actuator movement.

Just bought a 99 classic, and heat is lukewarm at best. I put my finger on actuator and turned the temp ****. The gear moves, but how can I tell if it actually working the door or not? 20degrees this morning and freezing my b*lls off.

Best bet is to start a new thread. You jumped onto a thread that is 7 years old.
