Default Mystery Connector

Hi Cherokee Jeepsters,

I just got an 89 XJ Laredo, 4.0. It's all original, 99k miles, and owned by three generations of one family (grandfather, son and grandson) since new. I'm a non-mechanical senior citizen who enjoys having "affairs" with old cars like this and challenging myself to work on them to the level I can while enjoying the driving experience. The car was siting for several years although started occasionally. It runs pretty good, but I have a lot to do.

I need your help! I found a connector of some sort that is just dangling from a group of small hoses located just to the right and under the coolant reservoir. It has an interesting connector on it but I can not see anywhere that it's suppose to connect. (See pic). It has a round, flat rubber thing about the diameter of a quarter but much thicker just above what appears to be a hose connection. It's right in the middle of the picture just above and slightly to the right of a "Y" intersection of wires. Above it is the coolant reservoir.

Any assistance to identify and get guidance on what I need to do with this "thingy" would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

The Colonel
(Name given to me by friends in my old age because I look like Col. Sanders....UGH!

Thank you, I'll see if I can find where those connections are.

From your description of the position it does not side quite right but
that could be the check valve breather for the transfer case or tranny.
On my '00 they are on the passenger side near the engine kinda down
in the tunnel though.

I'll take a good look. From my research last night on the web, and forum replies including yours, it does seem to be some kind of check valve.

Thank you.
